Seinfeld's Apartment

I've always thought Jerry Seinfeld had a nice apartment on the show. However, now with HD and a 65 inch tv, it looks like that on top of being a physical impossibility (the door can't open to the straight hallway depicted due to the angle of the kitchen), his apartment looks pretty run down. Needs a lot paint and touchups. It's also too cluttered with stuff he never touched during the entire run.

With HD we can also compare it to others like Frazier's apartment in Seattle which is spotless.

I guess that while Seinfeld the actor was a powerhouse entertainer in the 90s, Seinfeld the character was a struggling comedian in a cigar smoke stained building with a would-be homeless Kramer and a fat, conniving mailman.

having lived in NYC for 7 years, this is fairly standard.

Wasn't the friends apartment worth millions in reality? It was massive.

As I recall, it was a rent controlled apartment that belonged to Ross and Monica's deceased grandmother that Monica was living in illegally.

Nineties TV was written on books of lies. How many hours did these people work?

At least Scrubs and The Office showed how they make money without lying about their glamorous living conditions.

I'm still binging Seinfeld. Costanza cracks me up!

When thinking about the value/cost of Jerry's apartment, let's not forget that his neighbor is Postal Employee Newman.

I always thought Adam Sandler's apartment in Big Daddy had to be impossible to afford for a toll booth worker (even if you did have supplemental income from getting your foot run over by a taxi cab), then learned it was built on a sound stage.

I remember reading an article about Friends, mid-run, when the switch to HD happened. The gist was, essentially all of a sudden, everything was noticeable, and that was hard for set designers who'd never had every inch so noticeably visible before.

Also I walk around my house all day every day and am driven bonkers by cracks and **** I can't find time/effort to fix. Difference between me and Jerry seems to be he spends 100% of his time bull****ting with his friend at his house or a diner, and I…don't get to do that?

Also, the self-restraint I've shown in not paying $80 for this is truly shocking.

This is a long time ago, but I knew a couple of people that shared an apartment that was more like Newman's instead of Jerry's. It was a dump. And it was five times as much rent as they would have paid in Houston.

Seinfeld and Larry David lived in NYC as they were struggling to make it. Letterman. Leno. They all did it. And usually had roommates. They created the show to be similar to what they had experienced.

His apartment is pretty nice compared to some.

It's tv sitcom world. It's not reality. Frasier, Friends, and more have apartments larger than what they would be in real life because otherwise you can't to the blocking for the scene because the actors would be on top of each other. Everything would be too cramped.

I wonder if the Lego set for Kramer's place has a hot tub, a Farbman oversized dresser, and a shower with a shower head that cleans elephants at the circus and a garbage disposal for a drain.

All the talk shows got new sets at this time for the same reason. Before HD they could put things together with staples and cardboard and it didn't make any difference.

The more realistic NY sized apartment would be when Elaine used the janitor's closet to get the Supreme Flounder ordered from the Chinese restaurant when she realizes she's on the wrong side of 86th.

Tangent but I just started watching Seinfeld. I'm amazed that these episodes are 25 minutes long. Commercials today suck

I always thought the penthouse apartment that Lois Lane lived in during the first Superman movie seemed a bit out of financial reach for a reporter.

What's funny is that this lego set highlights Philo's comment about the physical impossibility of the door/hallway/kitchen.

I thought Jerry's bed was against the back wall, not the exterior wall with the window and fire escape Newman uses to get in and cheat at Risk.

I always assumed he got rich as a shrink in Boston and took a shiddy salary as a talk show host to help take care of his old man, who likely had a fat ass pension and helped pay for that place.

It's neither of these…there are hallways scenes when Kramer and Jerry both entering their apartments and corridor has no offsets or turns.

I'm only on season 2, but I didn't think he had a bedroom? I thought he slept on the pullout couch. In the first episode he brings up a cot for his lady friend to stay over when he isn't sure if it's a romantic visit. In the second episode he stays at Kramers apartment so his parents can stay at his. They sleep on the pullout couch. Those two things led me to believe it was a studio apartment and he didn't have a bedroom?

Yeah, it's never addressed later but he didn't appear to have a bedroom early on.
