I'm thinking about watching the new Star Wars stuff (Mandalorian, Boba Fett), but not sure how much of the old content I need to know to understand what is happening.

I know the absolute basics of the three original movies, but wouldn't have otherwise been able to pick out Boba Fett in a lineup without the marketing of the current show. I have no interest in rewatching any of these.

I also saw the one that came out around 2000, but don't think I saw the two after that.

I saw the first two of the newer movies, along with Rogue One, and don't feel like I was totally lost. I haven't seen Solo.

Am I going to be able to get by with this basic background?

like with any of these huge franchises, there will be some things you miss or don't pick up on because you haven't seen everything, but i don't think you need to see anything you haven't already for either mandalorian or book of boba fett.

obviously others may (and probably will) disagree.

Mandalorian is just a western set in the Star Wars universe.

There are a couple of character cameos that you won't really understand if you haven't gotten into the Star Wars Universe, but I honestly think you can like the show even without knowing why fans are geeking out.

Honestly, if you are even remotely into Star Wars and have kids, watch Clone Wars and Rebels first. Dave Filoni is the only guy working for Disney that seems to understand what we want out of Star Wars content.

as a long-time Dave Filoni supporter... he has been involved with both Resistance and Boba Fett, so his star has become severely tarnished lately.
I'll give you Resistance, but it's still too early in Boba Fett to call it. I'm actually ok with it so far (only seen eps 1 and 2, will watch 3 tonight). The flashbacks are pretty cool.

As far as Resistance, I think he was told he had do to something in that time period. And with the story as it had been told so far and having to make a self contained show that couldn't build to the upcoming movie, I think he probably did the best he could.

I watch his recaps after each episode. He helps fill in the gaps and history that might not be too obvious to the casual fan.

Personally, the prequels aren't necessary. Clone Wars is the start of Star Wars as far as I'm concerned. The only must watch SW for me is Clone Wars, Rebels is getting there, R1, the OT and Mandalorian so far.

The ST never happened in my matrix.

Going into season one of The Mandalorian, literally all you need to know is that it takes place five years after the end of Return of the Jedi, which was the third movie in the original trilogy.

But for a bit more context...

- The Empire (bad guys) has fallen and is in disarray. There are still a few residual pockets here and there throughout the galaxy, though. Think of it like the Nazis post-WWII, only a bit more organized and resilient.

- The Emperor is dead (though eventually coming back, according to the events of Rise of the Skywalker, the third movie in the sequel trilogy and the final movie in the Skywalker Saga). Vader is dead. Yoda is dead. And Boba Fett, the bounty hunter who brought Han Solo, frozen in carbonite, back to Jabba the Hutt, is presumed dead, at the bottom of the Sarlac pit he fell into when Luke, Leia, Han & co made their escape from Jabba/Tatooine.

- Speaking of, Luke, Leia, and Han are all still out there, somewhere in the galaxy, five years older than the last time we saw them.

- The Mandalorian is another bounty hunter in the vein of Boba Fett, though the two have never met.

- We're still 25 years away from the events of The Force Awakens, the first entry of the sequel trilogy. The residuals of the Empire we see in The Mandalorian will eventually go on to form The First Order in those movies.

Really, anything else outside of those basic facts I would consider extraneous.

Cool. Thanks. I actually really appreciate the little clarifications ("which was the third move", etc.)

Mine includes the PT and dumps Mando. It is excluded as you said.

the PT has some story beats that are relevant to the series as a whole.

Mando is extraneous and unnecessary.

and the ST is, as far as I am concerned, part of the multiverse. It is "could happen" not "has happened".
