I've really enjoyed the first two sets in this series. On their own they are entertaining movies and if you're into the Wizarding World they are solid additions to the universe.

Looking forward to see how the production / directing / acting team transition from Johnny Depo to Mads Mikkelsen as Gellart Grindewald... looks fun

I also liked the first 2. I am kinda confused at this point how this really involves Newt rather than just being a Dumbledore series

I am hoping a screenplay will be released like the others:
https://www.wizardingworld.com/discover/books

For the plot, I am sure Newt will be using his quirky beasts to steer the plot and solve issues. I like that it's not ALL centered on this method, and that the other characters introduced: Tina, her sister, Jakob, Grindewald, and others are new and really (except for the muggle) experienced magic users.

I thought the movies fell flat and haven't liked much about the storylines.

I do, however, absolutely love Jude Law's performance as a young Dumbledore. Every scene he has been in has been fantastic.

Totally agree. For lack of a better word, the movies have lacked the magic feel to me.

Newt would have been a great adventure of the week type character for a show that builds out the universe.

This series should have just been about Dumbledore.

I think a movie about a young Dumbledore befriending Grindlewald and adventuring to find the Deathly Hallows would have been a fun movie, with the end of the series being their falling out.

I'm a massive fan of the HP books and movies and have never been able to get into these despite a few attempts to watch on cable. Probably see 2/3rds of the first one and maybe the first 20 minutes of the second. To echo what others have said, they could have made an anthology of films with just the source material they had:

  • The founding of Hogwarts with the 4 House name wizards
  • Young Dumbledore/Grindewald
  • Basically the story of the third movie with Dumbledore/Grindewald end duel
  • Tom Riddle getting discovered and his time at Hogwarts (probably pretty dark for kids but oh well)
  • Voldemort's growing power & the time of James/Lily/Snape/ and the rest at Hogwarts
  • A third Voldemort-centric movie with a Rogue One style ending leading right into HP & TSS

They could have had a great series around the original OOTP and told the stories of characters like Molly's brothers and the Longbottoms.

Agree. A series on one of the streaming platforms around the rise of Riddle/Voldemort, the original Order, and ultimately culminating with the Potters' deaths would be fantastic. Dark tone a la Daredevil on Netflix with time to explore characters. Probably not as kid-friendly, but a lot of the kids have grown up and there are enough adults to command an audience.

Seems like a no brainer. Maybe one day.

I loved the Tri-Wizard tournament in GoF and always wished they'd do more stories around the other schools.

Did they ever address the timeline issue with McGonagall, or is it just a retcon?

Probably a big mistake / retcon. But she said she'd been teaching at Hogwarts 39 years - the easy way to explain it off would be to say it wasn't continuous service... 17-20 years from 1910 to 1927 during Grindewald, then starts again in the late 1970s up to Harry's time... = 39 ish years.

That's not official or anything but would be a somewhat tidy way to explain it... Slughorn had a breach in service.

Did any of the Dumbledore pensieve or Tom Riddle diary flashbacks show McGonnagal at Hogwarts between 1930 and 1977?

Again, I hadn't even noticed that before (but duh! Now that it was pointed out) so... this would be A WAY to explain it.

Another would be similar... she taught therein the 1910-1930s; took time off; came back in 1956 and has been teaching there for 39 years the second time around...

The first Fantastic Beasts was very enjoyable.

The second was one of the worst movies I've seen in a while. Didn't make any sense.

This has been a great HP prequel. They could put anything out and it would make billions.

I would watch the hell out of a "fantastic beast of the week" show. Would have made so much more sense rather than getting what we got.

This is where I'm at. I'll watch this one, but I'd like the plot to at least attempt to make sense this time without messing up the continuity of what already exists.

Final trailer came out today. Going full in on the Hogwarts connection, footage of Michael Gambon and all. They also recreate the Magneto/Professor X meeting from the first X-Men.

Eddie Redmayne, Oscar winner, down to being maybe the 4th most important character in his own movie?

Huge HP fan here. I always wondered how people enjoyed the movies without the books. There is so much left out, that you can see if you know the full story. The problem with these movies is they are still leaving that stuff out but with no source material to connect the dots. I'll definitely see this one, but I understand the concern.

For those that may not know, Alison Sudol, who plays Queenie, is an incredible singer. Acting is her gig now, but she was my dream girl 13 years ago, and still is.

Movies are a super pale comparison to the books. First movie is a good interpretation and a nice "come to life" of a lot of the characters, but once you get to the third movie it starts leaving out lots of important stuff, and 5-7 are just interpretations as best. I bet that you, like me, hate the final Harry/Tom Riddle fight in the movies.

I always see the 4th movie as the movie where thing really diverged from the books.

Sure there is some differences in the 3rd, but the exclusion of Winky from the movies and just overall reinterpretation of Dumbledore by Gambon really took the series in a bad direction.

i actually liked Gambon's interpretation of Dumbledore quite a bit, especially in Prisoner of Azkaban. If you set aside book knowledge and just try to follow the plot of the 5th one, it's incomprehensible.

It would be great if HBO or similar could do a series with each season could be one book. They'd probably still have to leave some stuff out, but with 8-10 hrs, they could take their time and tell so much more of the story.

Richard Harris was too passive and frail IMO.

I think it runs into the same problem that Star Wars ran into. Time to move on in the universe and away from the characters we know. Just my opinion.

I've enjoyed the movies but I won't run out and watch them.
