I need some clarification about western world. Are we talking about biggest celebrities in the west, or biggest globally that are from the west?

I think there is a disconnect between what we are talking about. I get that the OP is talking about celebrities from Europe and the Americas, my question is are we only focusing on their western popularity or are we looking at it globally. For example, Vin Diesel. If we only looked at how popular he was in America and Europe, I doubt he'd even crack the top 50. If we include his Asian popularity, you could make the argument that he could be top 10-15 because of how big Fast and Furious is in China.

What about Yao Ming? Basketball is pretty world wide right now. He is pretty recognizable, just for being so damned tall.

yea, there are a lot of people viewing this through our American lens and not understanding global notoriety. not understanding how well known the Queen is around the world or thinking any American Football player is among the top 50 most recognizable athletes around the world.

I think Lebron is pretty close. The Chinese were cut off from Western culture for much of Jordan's career.

I feel musicians have a leg up on a lot other professions. Musicians like Jagger, McCartney, or say Bono or Michael Jackson, literally toured the world, putting their face in front of tens/hundreds of thousands of people in dozens and dozens of countries on most continents.

Personally I wouldn't put Jagger anywhere near this list.

Would also apply to musicians -- Elton, Billy Joel, Bono, Madonna, etc. probably wouldn't tip the popularity scale against the likes of KPop stars, Gaga, Katy Perry, etc.

this seems flawed to me.

Older people, who maybe aren't on social media, all know the huge pop stars your first list, but are likely out of touch with modern pop stars.

Young people, who are on social media, know the new people, but, because those old pop stars like Elton are still touring, in movies, and on social media, the young people have likely come across them as well. Plus the biopics of elton, queen etc, played by young actors, all puts those 'old' celebrities in front of a young generation.

The happy medium here is Mariah Carey. Internationally famous across four decades.
