Watching on Amazon Prime. Forgot how good it was, horribly inaccurate but still entertaining. Would pay top dollar to see a movie about Cortes' exploitations in America

Been a long time since I watched that one, but I definitely remember it being highly entertaining.

My wife and I went to Peru over Christmas and I feel like Central and South America from those times has a ton of untapped potential entertainment wise, both before and during the colonization period.

Have you seen "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" by Werner Herzog? It's total fiction, but it fits the bill as far as Spanish conquistadors searching to find El Dorado. Klaus Kinski is creepy as hell in it.

Amazing movie. Just curious, what was so wildly inaccurate by Hollywood standards?

I'm not sure it tried to be especially historical.

Mel Gibson is a lunatic, but he knows how to make a great movie.

True, but the way he recreated the city "felt" authentic and I always got the vibe they probably went to great lengths to do their best in that dept, even though it's a complete fiction. I was just wondering if there was something in particular that was over the top ridiculously inaccurate. They had human sacrifices, crazy gap between the ruling elite and peasant masses, and I am sure the jungle tribes did their best to avoid "modern/civilized" life like the yanomami of today. Was the solar eclipse off by a century?

The sacrifices with the heart cut out were attributed to Aztecs, Mayans didn't have mass sacrifices like that. The ending with the Spaniards, completely different era. Overall I loved the movie it's a great adventure not super accurate

I love that Mel Gibson had people speaking Mayan and not English or Spanish.

He's actually in some great F'n movies. His character in Apocalypto is legendary though.

I'll let the historical film critic explain, he has special place in his colon heart for Mel Gibson.
