Started this tonight. Nothing groundbreaking, and while a bit paint-by numbers at times, it's pretty good overall and they do a great job of making Leto's & Hathaway's characters both somewhat insufferable yet also sympathetic. I didn't 100% buy the way they got together - it feels a bit rushed - but everything else is very well done. I'm intrigued and invested enough to keep going, at least.

The first three episodes dropped on Apple TV+ tonight, with the next five releasing over the next five weeks. Definitely worth a shot for anyone curious...

I don't think any other actor makes me think he needs a punch in the face like Leto.

This will only increase that feeling, though not necessarily in a totally bad way. It's a legit good performance, but he apparently went method for the entire shoot, and Hathaway didn't "meet" the real Leto until shooting wrapped. Sh*t like that makes my skin crawl. That said, again, he's actually very effective here, so maybe it was all worth it.

Why do people praise this? (Not saying you do).

It isn't impressive that they can't turn it on or off.

Agreed. I think it's incredibly self-centered, devalues human connection, makes just about everyone around them uncomfortable, and is flat out bizarre. It also tells me they're not good enough to turn it on and off, like any other professional does. If a f/cking surgeon doesn't need to pretend to operate on his/her dinner when they get home, to "stay in character," so to speak, an actor doesn't need to take their character home with them, and make people suffer through that nonsense.

to me that is pretty cool

that an actor takes their job so seriously they completely immerse themselves in it for months.

Daniel Day Lewis would sleep out in the woods during Last of the Mohicans

especially for war movies, the actors should become as much as possible the people they are playing

the ultimate question is this:

is Adam a criminal con artist-

or just a bad CEO who got people to buy into a legal pyramid scheme?

I'm not saying it doesn't produce results. I'm just saying that same actor should be able to produce the same results without having to make everyone around them play along.

Interesting. I remember watching the documentary about WW and what was insufferable were the idiots buying into the "we're going to change the world!"

Oh yeah, how?

"By changing it!"

I really hope the rumor that he rode a bike through the set of No Country For Old Men while they were shooting is true. Totally in character for Daniel Plainview.

Just about every article and bio I've read about Neumann makes a big deal about him being 6'5", it's not a minor detail. They should have at least TRIED to make Leto look taller or cast somebody else.

Anne Hathaway does a better Elizabeth Holmes voice in this than Amanda Seyfried did while playing Elizabeth Holmes.

really great.

need to check out the true story behind these guys.

It's basically been a bullet point storytelling of the true story so far. At least it is based on what I read in The Cult of We, Billion Dollar Loser, and several hours of podcasts that have been done on the story.

edit: I think they merged stuff that happened at several different summer camps into one

Been liking it so far too.
I can't remember to look this up, but what kind of upbringing did Adam have? He was raised in a Kulpritz or something like that. What was it called?

I'm not an actor, but "method" just seems like an excuse to be an *******. I think those that stay in character for an entire shoot just get off on it. I hate it when Leto is stuff I want to see - absolutely can't stand the guy, but I'm trying to take a Tom Cruise approach - separate the personal life crazy from the art.

edit: just saw TriAg's post - lol

you can't really see it's Leto

also watched the WeWork documentary on Hulu showing the real thing.

key takeaways:

Adam Neumann and his wife Rebecca are actually not physically attractive in real life

they are super leftist tree huggers to camouflage being money hungry grifters

anyone who believed that owning office space was a 14 billion dollar tech company deserves to have lost money
Four Seasons Landscaping
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If it had come along earlier or later, WeWork would have never gotten that valuation. Masayoshi Son had $100 billion to spend back when $100 billion was still a lot more money though.

The Vision Fund blew the roof off of a lot of valuations at that time, WeWork was just the most famous example of it.

I can think of one exception to this and that's Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly and apparently ticked off Tom Wilson (Biff) to the point where he almost beat his ass (or at least threatened Eric to "knock that **** off).

Considering what famously happened to Eric perhaps he learned a life lesson.
