Let's discuss.

1. Good movie, great movie, or the best of all time?

2. I or II?

3. How many times have you seen it?

4. Anyone here brave enough to say they dislike the movie and give your reasons?

1. It probably makes my Top 20, and the only reason it's not higher is nostalgia raises the others above it. But I have no qualms with it being called the GOAT.

2. II by a hair. The reason is De Niro.

3. Probably 5-6 times. Saw it for the first time at 14 or so and enjoy it more each time.

1: Best of all time when combined w II.

2: Whichever I saw most recently (currently I a couple mths ago)

3: 10+ in full planned viewings and another 100+ in stop and watchs when on TV

4: I can see why someone may not like it that much. As a young viewer (15) it came off as slow and a little confusing . I didn't care for it. I rewatched it around aged 22 and completely fell in love with and couldn't wait to watch II. I always ask people who say they didn't like it how old they were when they watched. Regardless of age I encourage people to rewatch and give it another shot.

1. Good movie, great movie, or the best of all time? Masterpiece of story telling through film.

2. I or II? Part II, I enjoy the dynamics of the story more. The contrast of Vito who takes on the power of the Don for his family verses Michael who destroys almost every family relationship all the while claiming wanting to make the business legit.. Part II is both the best prequel and sequel all in one film.

3. How many times have you seen it? All the way through start ot finish, both about a dozen times. Watching a scene here, a scene there pieced all together maybe a dozen more.

4. Anyone here brave enough to say they dislike the movie and give your reasons? I can see why many would not enjoy these films. Both are long and demand the full attention of the viewer. In other words, not every movie can be everybody's cup of tea.

1. GOAT (of the movies I've seen)

2. The original and it's not close for me. I appreciate Part II as a great piece of art but it's not nearly as good of a movie in my opinion. A) I find the Michael story has too many moving pieces and is difficult to follow. I've seen it maybe half a dozen times and it would still take me a few minutes with some backtracking to explain the 1950s storyline. B) I personally prefer a more traditional story arc than the slow motion train wreck that is the Michael story in Part II. I get the whole point is the parallel rise and fall thing but I just don't enjoy it as much. C) All that said DeNiro's performance is one of my favorites/best in any movie I've seen.

3. Maybe a dozen

4. My wife is afraid to watch it because she knows I think it's the best movie ever. I try to tell her that I don't care if she likes it or not. I'm not one of these people in disbelief or outrage when someone says they didn't think it was that great. I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea.

1. One of the best of all time. It's on my automatic stop down list but I can't say it's THE best. I like Casablanca, The Sting, Unforgiven, and a few others too much. It's basically list of 1a, 1b, 1c, etc. for me.

2. 2 is better than 1 but that doesn't mean 1 isn't among the GOATs.

3. 20+ times

2. Whichever I'm watching - Godfather II is my other top 2. Since I watched Godfather in 4K last night it's at the top today.
2. 20+ easy

1) In the running for best all time. I freaking love these movies.

2) Depends on the day but gun to head probably II

3) 8-10 full sit downs. I made my girlfriend (now wife of 7 years) watch them while drinking Coppola wine and made spaghetti. I of course quoted the spaghetti sauce scene as we cooked. She now quite often drops the leave the gun, take the cannolis line. I'm proud.

4) nope

I really need to watch this. I attempted once, but got distracted a few minutes in and never made it back. Maybe a project for the next bad weather weekend.

It's definitely the kind of movie you need to set the time aside and dim the lights. At least the first time or two.

1. One of the greatest of all time
2. The original Godfather is the better of the two, for me.
3. I'm only in my mid 30s and first saw the movie when I was 22 or so. I would say I have seen it from start to finish about 10 times. I do enjoy watching reaction videos on YouTube and seeing people see it for the first time.

1. Used to be GOAT but still solid top 3
2. Literal OG by a mile (explained in #4)
3. Countless. One of the most interesting versions was where they recut both I & II chronologically
4. Not really a fan of II--too much Coppola and too little Puzo. Seemed like Coppola hated that he romanticized gangsters/mafia in the OG and set out to show dark side of that life. Probably more accurate but less interesting to watch.

I can probably quote more lines from the two Godfather movies than any other movie, so that's my answer to #1.

When sales got really slow at our company a couple of years ago, I was talking about a Sales Mgr we have that was great when sales were good, not so much during the bad. I told a colleague that this SM was "not a wartime consigliere".

Colleague knew what I meant.

If you like the movie…go read the book. It has a lot more details than they could fit in the movie.

I recall a lot more details on the movie producer, and what a scum bag he was. Also more background on Luka Brassi (?), he was a bad man and not in a good way.

Mostly a great movie but the scenes in Italy are boring. It's in my top 100, but probably bottom half. Godfather II is better.

And if you didn't feel like the movie gave you enough detail about the width of Lucy's hoo-ha there are about 50 pages dedicated to that.

I love the novel but they go into a couple of backstories that don't add much to the plot.

I haven't read it in years maybe there was a deeper meaning that I just didn't pick up on.

Both are great movies.

Prefer I to II

Only seen I twice and II once - both in the last few years. I know - WTF is wrong with me ?!?

I like I better mainly because of the focus on all the members of the family during the course of the movie, while II is mainly about Michael. Everyone always said that II is better than I, and I just couldn't get there. In fairness, I've only watched II once, so I guess I should give it another try.

1. Both are in top 10 movies of all time. Still smoke most anything else that has come out in the last 50 years.

2. First one, just barely.

3. Dozen or more times.

4. Not applicable.

1. Great movie, and I cannot disagree with anyone arguing it's the greatest of all time.

2. I for me, but II is still a masterpiece.

3. All the way through, probably only 4 or 5 times. But I've seen parts too many times to count.

4. N/A.

fyi - here's a list of 500 greatest movies all time, statistically compiled from worldwide critics & lists. It has Godfather I and II as the top 2 movies.
Quite a list- worth exploring

I really think maturity is important when watching these older films. I watched Casa Blanca when I was a teenager and couldn't wait for it to just end. Watched it again recently (30ish years later) and loved it.

For those interested there is a short series coming to Paramount I believe called "The Offer" about the behind the scenes moves made to get the Godfather made (not sure if it covers actual filming).

Also, I believe a movie is in the works covering the same thing but will focus more on the actual filming of it.

1. Great movie.

2. II, although II wouldn't have been possible without I.

3. Tough to say over the decades given how many times it was randomly replayed on cable before streaming. Double digits for sure.

Sorry to be "that guy" but the line is "take the cannoli." There is no "s" at the end.
