1) In the running for best all time. I freaking love these movies.

2) Depends on the day but gun to head probably II

3) 8-10 full sit downs. I made my girlfriend (now wife of 7 years) watch them while drinking Coppola wine and made spaghetti. I of course quoted the spaghetti sauce scene as we cooked. She now quite often drops the leave the gun, take the cannolis line. I'm proud.

4) nope
Sorry to be "that guy" but the line is "take the cannoli." There is no "s" at the end.

Watch 1 and 2 combined in chronological order once on a special cut on HBO years ago with my dad and it was fantastic. Highly recommend watching it that way.

Both are two of the top 5 movies of all time. Original edges it out for me.

Short answer: I think I and II are roughly equal and they are the best movies of all time.

Feels weird paying $29.99 when seems like I've seen it 100 times for free and watch it on AMC every time I'm at a hotel when traveling for work.

But so far the wedding scene looks great in 4K and since I know every line I find myself scanning for cool stuff in the background on the big screen in 4K. It's as great as ever

Godfather 3 Coda is much better than the original version. 1+2 is still top 5 goat

What's the difference between Coda and the original Part III?

Two best movies of all time. Without question. I agree with the poster earlier that said age/maturity is a must to appreciate. I watched as a teenager and just didn't get it. I've probably seen 50 times now in all different formats. 1 by itself, 2 by itself, 1 and 2 together, the special sequential version of 1 and 2 together, etc. Love all of them. I think Part 1 is the best but 2 is right there and the backstory is awesome.

I will duck for cover here…..I think Part 3 is right there with them. Sure the chick acting leaves something to be desired, but I love the ending of the story.

CBS Sunday Morning about to show a Godfather feature, including an interview with Coppola.

For those interested there is a short series coming to Paramount I believe called "The Offer" about the behind the scenes moves made to get the Godfather made (not sure if it covers actual filming).

Also, I believe a movie is in the works covering the same thing but will focus more on the actual filming of it.

Interesting conversation. What will the longevity of The Godfather be? What is anyone under 20's relationship with this movie?

It still is shot in an older, slower style. I think about the scene where Sonny is on the phone with his informant in the police department to find out where McClusky is going to be for the assassination. That scene is pretty long, the camera doesn't move, and you hear only Sonny's side of the conversation. No way a modern director would film it that way or include that scene. Someday that older, slower style won't be tolerated anymore by younger audiences.

Has anyone on here seen Angels With Dirty Faces (1938) or The Public Enemy (1931)? Sooner or later The Godfather will be viewed the same way those classic mob movies are. Time is undefeated.

To your point, several years ago I took my son to see "Creed" when it came out (of Rocky fame, not Scott Stapp fame) and he loved it. We came home and I said, "Alright, let's watch Rocky!" and it was the slowest freaking movie. He said, "When do they fight?"

My first R rated movie. Talked my Mom into it when I was 12. Told her my teacher recommended it and not that bad. Mom was not happy. Always brings back good memories.

Helicopter attack is what ruins it for me.

Speaking of III, I'm watching The Man Who Knew Too Much on TCM right now. There's an assassination at an opera that looks like a pretty direct source for the opera hit scene in G3.

Might have been mine too. I was stuck at home w/ chicken pox so my mom was a little more lenient about renting something i really wanted to see. Think I'd already read the book or most of it after swiping it from a shelf at my grandmother's house. 7th or 8th grade.

I'm not real big on rankings - too many great films out there.

That said, The Godfather & Godfather II are incredible. It has really held up after a half century. I saw it when I was 15 or 16 at the drive-in a year after it was released. I had read Puzo's novel, so it was easy to follow.

IF I had a list, it would be there, even though I don't like violence in movies. I know when to close my eyes when watching it, as I have 1 & 2 memorized.

Another film I saw that year is one of my all time favorites - American Graffiti. The connection to the Godfather was Coppola, who was influential in getting an unknown Director named George Lucas to write the script. Lucas had directed one feature film, and it starred Robert Duvall. I have read that American Graffiti is the most profitable movie ever, as a ratio of production cost to revenue.

The rest is history.
