I think 3 mile island had just happened or maybe it was the movie The China Syndrome.

I can't find the video buts it's definitely at period piece as there a so many "at the time" references.

It was both. Three Mile Island happened while the movie was still playing in theaters.

This is from my HS/A&M era, usually the period of life everyone says is their favorite SNL period, and that sketch was a favorite - and just made me laugh again. You don't really really need to know who mclaughlin is , or that show, because the format and acting is ludicrous and the writing is funny even on its own. I find myself starring other clips from that era and I'm still one page 1 - haven't seen Sprockets yet
