How do you balance casting a big name vs an unknown?

What are the key considerations besides cost?

Are there certain roles where you prefer an unknown so people aren't caught up in watching Movie Star instead of getting absorbed in the story?

What is the process for identifying the Next Big Thing, and is that give a producer/director/casting agent cachet in the industry?

I'd say it just depends on the project. For example, when they were casting for The Office, they purposely didn't want to cast big names to make it seem more real.

She's one of the top casting directors out there. Her job is to pick the actors for the roles.
