Radiohead is in that long list of bands that I just don't get. It isn't that they are bad ...it is that they are just so boring.

I don't begrudge anyone that likes them...I just don't get it.

Radiohead and Arcade Fire are bands I LOVE but can also completely understand how they are not for everyone.

The Bends -> OK Computer -> Kid A is as good a three album run as has ever existed. You could show me ones that meet it but never one that beats that run of albums.

To tie them together I would also put Funeral -> Neon Bible -> The Suburbs at that same peak level. Immaculate three album run.

I grew up listening to everything on MTV starting in the mid 90's and the alt radio station was still playing a lot of grunge and most of it blended together in a pretty boring, generic form. A few bands daring to do something more inventive stood out from the rest. Only reason I'm jealous I wasn't a little older at the time is that I'd loved to have seen my favorite 90's bands live at their height.
The same could be said of any genre of music in living memory. There was a lot of bad grunge/alt-rock, just like there's a lot of bad metal or hip-hop or pop, and much of it passes from the zeitgeist pretty quickly.

Offspring - Smash and Green Day's dookie are my two favorite albums of the 90s.

A bunch of my pothead friends in high school worshipped Radiohead and listened to them all the time, but I never really got into them. Not sure why.

Smash is underrated.

And as a younger generation than many of you, Blink 182's Enema of the State is a solid entry of the late 90s and one of my personal favorites, along with Offspring's Americana.

I was really into B182 back in the day. I really enjoyed Dude Ranch and even cheshire cat, but yes, Travis Barker's arrival on Enema makes it my favorite Blink182 album to date.

Another really great album that few remember is Bjork's "Debut."

You can even shift that one album back or forward and still have a kick ass 3 album run, or add KEA and/or TBA for an untouched 4 or 5 album run.

Interesting commentary on "The Bends" vs "Ok Computer" during one of Rick's livestreams. Skip to ~2:30.

I've always thought the Bends was a better album than OK Computer.

When some of you talk about the Offspring in a Radiohead thread, I throw up in my mouth.

LOL this x10.

OK Computer was revolutionary but agree that it is not their best (I have Kid A and In Rainbows in front of it).

They might be the most pretentious main stream band ever.

The fans are too.

Not on radio except maybe 2-3 songs, they hardly ever tour the US...

They seem kinda underground to me. Kinda Toolish maybe, though Tool is more in mainstream than RH, in my opinion.

This is probably somewhat true. But they are also one of the most influential if not THE most influential active band for other musicians today.

Also wouldn't consider them mainstream in the traditional sense.

Q: If they had included Lift in just the right placement and removed Electioneering, would OKC now contend with In Rainbows as top Radiohead album?

Weird Al's "Off the Deep End" has everyone else in the 90's playing for second place.

The only thing worse than a Radiohead fan is one which thinks the band is still underground.

This discussion reminds me of what is probably my favorite Onion headline of all time:

Humanity Still Producing New Art As Though Megadeth's 'Rust In Peace' Doesn't Already Exist

Quote:

Saying that any further endeavors of technical skill and imagination were pointless, experts at the Smithsonian Institution reportedly questioned Monday why new art was still being produced after the pinnacle of aesthetic and creative potential was reached in 1990 with Megadeth's fourth studio album, Rust In Peace. "As the unquestioned apex of the entire history of the creative arts, Rust In Peace is the finest and last necessary piece of human expressiom but it's almost as though current so-called artists are completely oblivious to Dave Mustaine's blistering, transcendent guitar work on 'Hangar 18,'" said Smithsonian curator of contemporary art Joanna Marsh, gesturing dismissively in the direction of a massive self-portrait by photorealist Chuck Close, completed in 2000.

I understand that they are not for everyone. But they are anything but overrated. Just do a quick Google search on artists/bands that have been influenced by Radiohead.

Don't care how yuppie it makes me sound, Paranoid Android is one of the best songs I've ever heard. I was pretty heavy into percussion/drumming all through my teens and early 20's and that song just blew me away.

Lol at this thread.

The only way to combat pretentious music fans who worship Radiohead is by bringing in a fan of an even better group to this thread and blow them away with a massive truth bomb.
