The same could be said of any genre of music in living memory. There was a lot of bad grunge/alt-rock, just like there's a lot of bad metal or hip-hop or pop, and much of it passes from the zeitgeist pretty quickly.Teacher_Ag said:
I grew up listening to everything on MTV starting in the mid 90's and the alt radio station was still playing a lot of grunge and most of it blended together in a pretty boring, generic form. A few bands daring to do something more inventive stood out from the rest. Only reason I'm jealous I wasn't a little older at the time is that I'd loved to have seen my favorite 90's bands live at their height.

They seem kinda underground to me. Kinda Toolish maybe, though Tool is more in mainstream than RH, in my opinion.
