Do you pay as much attention to what your kids watch as your parents did?

So, last night the family watched the original Top Gun on Netflix. When the love scene came on, my wife started flipping out telling me to fast forward. I'm pretty sure I was seven when I saw the original, and my kids are nine and 13 now. That got me thinking about how much more I watched when I was kid. If the movie was PG-13 or less, my parents didn't give a crap if I saw it. There was plenty of cursing and nude scenes in PG/PG-13 movies back in the 80s. My parents were the most strict of any of my friend group, too, so at my friends house I often saw stuff like "Friday the 13th" and "Nightmare on Elm Street."

Despite my wife's freak out in Top Gun (I think she was expecting it to be worse), I've never felt like we shelter our kids from movies. They don't watch R movies, but I've never cared if they watch PG or PG-13. I actually wouldn't even care if my oldest watched some R movies, but the youngest is always around so it's hard. Despite that, I realized last night that my kids have seen nowhere near as much stuff as I did when I was their age. I suppose it's because everything that comes out now is either a Marvel Super Hero movie or a Pixar type cartoon.

Anyone else realizing how much more graphic stuff they watched as a kid compared to their kids now?

My kids can bebop over to the computer and see any number of unspeakable acts, Top Guns lame sex scene wouldn't raise their interest.

So, in conclusion, my kids have seen much much more graphic stuff via the inter webs than I did as a kid.

I remember my son (7 at the time) asked my wife while we were watching E.T. how someone could have p**is breath. The look on her face was priceless.

Took my son and a few of his friends to see Ted when it came out. They where 12. It was much worse than I thought it would be but they loved it.

Hah - that was my first R rated movie in a theater (age 10). Somehow convinced my mom that it wasn't supposed to be that bad. After that experience I think she stopped caring about movie violence as it didn't get much worse than that.

Hate to be the one to break it to you, but your kids have seen WAY more graphic stuff than you think. Especially porn. Thank the Internet.

My parents could care less what I watched.

I keep an eye out what my kids watch. My issue with what they watch isn't because its graphic. They watch these annoying YouTube content creators and it all seems so ****ing stupid.

Lol. Robocop was one of the few R rated movies my parents took me to see... And by took me to see, I mean bought me a ticket and dropped me off. They only did that because it was filmed in Dallas.

PrestonPlayz apparently lives relatively close to me. If I ever meet him in person, I'm going to punch him in the face because of all time I've had to spend listening to his voice in the background... And before someone comes on here and tells me they know him, and he's actually a really good dude in person, I don't care. Both he and his wife have obnoxious voices and deserver to be punched in the face daily.

I think my own experience growing up, with parents who didn't always consider what a movie might contain, made me a bit more strict regarding what I let my kids watch.

My parents started out overly strong in this area. For instance, I didn't get to go see Jaws when it came out. I was 8, but spent a lot of time at the beach growing up in Lake Jackson. Perhaps that was their reasoning. Curiously, I did get to see Orca. They didn't let me see more obvious stuff like The Omen or Halloween, either, but did let me go see the remake of King Kong (yeah, that was not a problem). But Dad was a bit more oblivious, I think, as time went on. The first R-rated movie I got to see was Black Sunday (Super Bowl terrorism movie that came out in 1977 I think). Dad also took me to a bunch of movies that made perfect sense for me - Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, Star Trek, etc as well as every one of those cheap Star Wars ripoffs that came out in the aftermath of that movie, prior to The Empire Strikes Back. Then a movie came out with a tag line that started with the words "In space". Yep, that was apparently must see for me as far as my Dad was concerned. He didn't both to read the rest of that tag line: "no one can hear you scream". Alien. Scared the living **** out of me. Literally had nightmares the next 2 years. Despite all that, I thought at the time and still think now that Alien is the greatest monster movie ever put to film.

But that formed my own opinion as to what I should let me kids watch. When each were younger, I knew not to start certain types of movies - Poltergeist, The Shining, or Paranormal Activity were obvious, but I also kept them away for more real movies/shows like Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Winds of War, War and Remembrance, or anything featuring true life atrocities such as the Holocaust. My youngest came downstairs when I was about half-way through a re-watch, first time in years, of Terminator 2 Judgment Day. She was probably 4 at the time. I had forgotten the thoroughly coarse language sprinkled through that movie, but also that it should have been a completely unacceptable movie for someone her age just due to the violence in it. She didn't seem bothered, though, until Arnold lowers himself into the molten metal. Then she lost it in much the same way as a kid might lose it during Bambi, or how she would literally lose it during Avengers Infinity War when Spider-Man dusted.

Now, half way through high school, anything is fair game for the youngest. The oldest has been that way also for years (married, A&M grad, etc).

Boys age 6 and 4. Yes I know what they watch because I'm watching it with them. Screen time is privilege in our house. That being said, we enjoy some Rescue Rangers episodes even though they cross today's norm.

We pay more attention to what our kids watch than either of our parents did when we were growing up. Especially when it comes to watching videos on the internet because there's some pretty twisted stuff out there.

I saw Jaws when I was 5 and Texas Chainsaw Massacre when I was 6 (my parents didn't know about that one and it was not a smart decision on my part). My kids definitely have more restrictions on what they see.

My kids are 5 and 8 and I'm more protective over what they watch than my parents did with me, especially when it comes to sex. I think it's the realization that eventually, they'll be exposed to way more stuff than I was, and I want to preserve their innocence as long as I can.

When I was growing up, we had three channels: CBS, NBC, ABC. My parents purchased their first Curtis Mathis in 1967. Very little supervision required on what I was watching as a child!

We control what our kids see much more actively than my parents had to just from the way technology has changed. But there are still kids with cell phones, etc. whose parents are too lazy to give a **** what their own children are exposed to so I'm sure they've been around a good amount of stuff I'd rather not they be. But you can only do so much.

I have watched some of the movies I saw as a kid and it cracks me up how I missed references or bad stuff.

As a kid, you don't think about the inuendos and naughty stuff. I watched shows like smokey and the bandit or Blazing Saddles and didn't get half the references. Now I see these shows and I'm like HOLY SMOKES..how did I miss that???

It is hard to control what is being watched by the kids compared to our day

But with three channels and no internet not hard to control back then either

How much of what your parents allow you to watch ends up being determined by which child you are anyways?

First born usually gets the kid gloves with tv, second born is much more relaxed, but still some limits, and once you are past three you just hope they are in the house not breaking something.

Apparently not.
My oldest (now 25) has always been an anime fan. It probably started with Pokmon and DragonBall Z, but through junior high and high school with the advent of streaming services like Funimation and CrunchyRoll the viewing opportunities expanded.
We've gone "back" and watched some things together like Hunter x Hunter, Attack on Titan, and Full Metal Alchemist and have been asked, "Why did you let me watch this?! Anime is NOT for kids!"
Well, we didn't know you were watching it.

We watch out more than our parents for sure, but I have noticed the huge difference in ratings back from the 80's and now days. Sitting down to watch some PG rated stuff from back in the day it was so much more profanity and sexual stuff. My kids are 7 and 10 and we love to watch old school movies together but stuff like Teen Wolf had me cringe with some of it and good lord the cussing in Ferris Bueller. The cussing I dont mind especially for the 11 year old but I have to watch out for the more sexual based stuffed for sure because we are closing in on having to discuss that anyways.

Also, I'm just here to say my parents did zero research when they rented movies for me. I was the youngest, so typically they'd rent a movie for me, and I'd watch in my parents room upstairs. The rest of the family would watch a more mature movie in the living room. I experienced both Gremlins and the Dark Crystal alone in a dark room at night. I was too afraid to get out of the bed to turn the TV off... crazy.

The level of violence we saw in movies is waaaay higher than what my kids have seen. I was probably 8 when I saw Commando. My dad took us to the theater to see Boyz in the Hood. I was 11 or 12. My sister was younger.

My son and I binged Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites

I would not have let him watch them at 7

But he's almost 14.
I am sure he has seen way worse than the language of those two shows

I was born at the end of '81, and my dad took me with him to the theater to see kid classics such as:

- Cobra
- Die Hard
- Predator
- Commando
- Delta Force
- Beverly Hills Cop II

And many others I can't remember. When boobs popped out, my parents just made me cover my eyes. When I was about 12 or so, they just stopped caring because they knew about the Playboys the neighborhood friends had hidden in the woods. Squirrel hunting with BB/pellet guns and boobs. What a childhood!
