So I watched First Blood for the first time in a very long time. I remembered it as an action movie only but damn it's really good beyond just the action. Trautman is a bit ridiculous but the acting is solid and most of the script/dialogue is solid.

Agree? Disagree?
If you say you hate the state of politics in this nation and you don't get involved in it, you obviously don't hate the state of politics in this nation.

I too love a good woke movie. Especially one that is a scathing critique of over policing and the criminalization of homelessness combined with the lack of adequate mental health services.

Or a critique of the poor treatment soldiers received after returning home form vietnam

Not sure why you used "or" and not "and" or "through"

Is First Blood really underrated though?

I do think it's funny how different First Blood is from the Rambo movies that came after it.

My thought too. Went from everything described above to full on action series (though several of the sequels were good for different reasons)

how do you think Stallone became the biggest star in the 1980s?

I personally think of the gratuitous violence and action of the second and fourth movie when I thought of the Rambo series. First Blood is a different movie, as you stated and pretty damn good.

It was either his pro-union masterpiece F.I.S.T. or Rhinestone that did this.

I do think his writing talent is erroneously overshadowed by his acting talent. His best scripts as a writer are better than his best performances as an actor.

Add "Rocky" to that list. From 3 Oscars to caricatures.

First Blood is one of my all-time favorite movies.

Coincidentally, it was also the first movie I ever watched on a VCR.

the cinematography is great. i always watch the first 20 min or so when its on TV just to see that pacific NW scenery behind a typical 80s small town.

Loved that movie. One of the best from the year 1982. The first sequel was good, the second sequel was better, and then they trail off in quality.

I'd agree.

Now do "Tommy Gun".

Yes. And I just watched Rambo movies at this point to just see if he mows down baddies with a minigun again. They waste too much time with plot and dialogue on the new ones these days.

Just because you didn't recognize a movie as great doesn't mean it's underrated. RT gives it 85%

The kind of funny thing is First Blood was actually pretty light on dialogue. I love that they let the camera, sly's body language, and the setting do a lot of the story telling.

That said, the dialogue they did use was pretty powerful as a result, imo.

For example: "Give that man a CEE-gar!"

I never saw "First Blood" until a few years ago, and I only knew the series from the cartoonish sequels. "First Blood" is a VERY different movie.

I believe it is based on a book where the main character is much more violent, killing many more people and not in self defense. Stallone insisted the character be toned down in the movie.

Fair enough. It had been a long while since I had last seen it and I had the cartoonish version stuck in my head.

How the hell did he get so many roles portraying a tough guy? IMO, it's one of the great mysteries of Hollywood.
