Never saw 1&2. Just never looked interesting to me. Loved Ragnarock.

How much does the backstory with Jane play into the new movie? Do I need to see 1 or 2 to really appreciate the new one?

Jane is awful and the weakest part of two of the worst films in the MCU.

The romance is contrived and her role is basically Shia Lebouf in Transformers 1: being the human reaction/interaction to the introduction of these superbeings.
