I went down an adventure movie rabbit hole thanks to Top Gun: Maverick. It was so great that I thought the world must have misjudged Tom Cruise's version of The Mummy. I watched The Mummy, and with my expectations set to zero, I enjoyed it a little bit. But Raiders it was not. Did Indiana Jones of the 80s ruin it for adventure and pulp style movies? All three 80s Raiders had rottentomatoe scores over 84%. Its hard to find one over the passing grade of 70 since then.

Uncharted: 40%
National Treasure: 46%
Tomb Raider: 20%
Rocketeer: 66%
King Solomon's Mines (2005): 45%
The Mummy (1999): 61%
The Mummy Returns (2001): 47%
Journey to the Center of the Earth: 61%
The Da Vinci Code: 25%
Sahara: 38%

There are few exceptions, although they have some cheats. King Kong and Skull Island both scored over 70%, but they had a giant gorilla. The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise does well if that falls into the same category. But if it's a normal guy on some clandestine adventure against a secret society or ancient evil or on a quest for magical artifacts…..mehhhh, you're looking at about a 45% on RT. Thanks for ruining the genre Spielberg.

The 80's Alan Quartermain movies were great. I also love Firewalker, even though it is ridiculously campy.

Interesting list. It's hard for me to think of any off the top of my head however I would expect that most people would qualify the Lord of the Rings Trilogy as Adventure movies.

EDIT: crap....ignore the LOTR reference.....didn't read the bottom of your post good enough that clarified more single dude-type adventures

Also Uncharted and Tomb Raider are video game movie adaptations and those pretty much always suck so the source material is already a problem there and skews the average.

The Mummy Returns being a lazy sequel also skews the average a bit.

But yeah...hard to think of other Adventure Movies off the top of my head to consider here....

If it's panned by the critics, it's likely an enjoyable action flick

The Brendan Frasier Mummy movies, and the National Treasure movies (will we ever get part 3???) were awesome. Definite Indiana Jones vibes in those, although none can hold a candle to the best of Indiana Jones (1 & 3).

I could say the same thing about monster movies. Was introduced to this type of movie at a very young age, and as such, I have always loved watching monster movies. These are typically grade-B crap, but no matter. And then along comes Ridley Scott with Alien in 1979. There have been monster movies released in the years since Alien, but inevitably they get compared to Alien. Unfairly, perhaps, but for monster movies, Alien is sheer perfection. So yeah, thanks for ruining monster flicks, Ridley.

There are a lot of great movies mentioned above. Firewalker, the Alan Quartermain movies, Romancing the Stone, and the Brendon Frasier movies are all a lot of fun (and some of my personal favorites). But even with some great actors in those movies and good story lines, they all fall short of Indiana Jones, and none of them get the critic love.

About the the LoTR movies- definitely adventure movies, but they sit right in the middle of the Fantasy section. Star Wars is similar. Those movies are almost too big to call an action flick.

I would call Escape from New York an adventure movie.

I agree with other posters that I like most of those movies, guess I just have bad taste in movies!

Hmmm, that'll probably be a pass for me, although it does say there is a third film in development. If that third film does not feature Nicholas Cage and a revelation of whatever the President thought was on that page in the Book of Secrets (I think that's what it was called), then meh. That would be kinda like having The Empire Strikes Back deliver that most famous of lines, followed by ... nothing.

It's been over 10 years since I saw NT2, but I distinctly remember as a HS student that there was some huge plot hole with the movie. Something like an object in part of the treasure hunt was made after the civil war in real life, but they deciphered the code originally during the civil war.

Honestly, I think people are up their own butts about movies now. It used to just be Siskel and Ebert types telling you what sucks and what's great. Now a movie comes out and within minutes of some "embargo" you have countless Twitter smarties talking about why this sucked or why that sucked. Hard to just have fun anymore.

Case in point, at least half the movies in the OP we're a good time, but I guess Brenden Frasier doesnt advance the human race enough

Siskel and Ebert used to also give you their critic thoughts, but then would often give you an alternate view of "this movie is good if you just want to have a good time".

Just added the audience reviews because I was curious. Most of them are not surprisingly quite a bit higher than the critics.

I think the audience score on that is way too high.

It was definitely enjoyable, but not 92% enjoyable. More like a 80% for me. If Hollywood would stop with these "beyond belief x10" special effects it would have scored higher for me.

Question about RT. Is the total score an aggregator of a binary score? In other words, they ask a fan what they thought on a scale of 0 to 10. If it's a 6 or better, it gets called a "like" and counted like a 1. Folks who call it a 5 or worse get a "dislike" and it's counted like a 0. Then, all of that is counted, and a final aggregate score of 92 means that 92/100 people "liked" the movie as in they thought it was a 6 or higher, not that it was a 9.2/10.

I am assuming that's how it works.
