He's able to put into words why I'm so bored with 90% of what Hollywood is pumping out. But I think the answer to his question at 6:45 is Top Gun Maverick.

I made it 5 mins in and then started jumping around.
This guy is an idiot.

I agree with him about the Han luke and Leia scene and I agree that making movies by committee is a terrible terrible idea

Zack Snyder has yet to make a good movie including the Zack Snyder cut. He makes visually interesting movies and can create a scene but every movie he's ever made has been forgettable

Politics and art are woven together they always have been they always will be. A movie that does not have a political religious or social message is the exception not the rule. that has always been true

Taking about how franchises are dead because we are too fractured of a society and the franchises are getting to political and proceeds to name *checks notes* star trek the show that was created to drive social and political change through showing what a diverse egalitarian post capitalist society could look like

Coming from a guy that has to inject politics into many of his posts.

Complete it and watch his parts 2 and 3 of that same discussion. Interested to hear what you think.

His point went way over your head. There's always been politics in movies, they weren't always used to fill a checklist.

I also agree with you to some extent about art and politics being intertwined, but I think in great movies the movie stands up and is entertaining whether or not you pick up on/care about any political elements.

Since I brought up Top Gun Mav as an answer to the question he poses around 6:45, I'll use that as an example. In the movie when the US DoD deems it necessary to bring in the best of the best of their aviators it just so happens to be an extremely diverse crew, including a woman. That was a decision on their part to show that America's strength lies in our diversity, etc, BUT they didn't feel the need to bend the plot around that message. From there on out it was all about fun, badass, well-shot action. So yes there was inevitably some degree of a politial/social message in there, but whether the audience noticed or cared wasn't the point, good storytelling and cinema was, which is why it broke hella records.

I agree with this guy's take insofar as I wish Hollywood would put virtue signaling on the back back back burner and just focus on making good, original content meant first and foremost to get butts in seats and leave viewers laughing/crying/shook.

I agree with a lot of what he says, much of it i and others have posted here many times. Originality and art has always had to be balanced with commerce, but the pendulum has now swung much more sharply in one direction.

It's a symptom of the condition. They can't help it.

I agree with him 100% on "preachiness". It's one thing to include politics, it's another to get preachy about it.

Just thinking about my favorite movies (movies where I came out the watch saying, "damn that was good!"): Star Wars (the originals), Terminator 1 & 2, Back to the Future (all 3), The Hunt for Red October, Top Gun (both), Galaxy Quest, Jerry McGuire, True Lies, Frequency, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Abyss (the original, not the BS directors cut), the original Matrix, and maybe a few I'm forgetting. Not a single one of them is "preachy".

This applies to TV too. Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Americans, Sopranos, Narcos, Better Call Saul are all great and none of them are preachy. And come to think of it, GoT started out non-preachy, and then transitioned into more preachy at the end. Yesterday I watched part of an episode of This is Us with my wife, and holy crap that show preaches it's ass off (and is therefore a pile of steaming crap).

He's on to something there.

This video is ignoring the obvious answer and clearly made for circle-jerking purposes for people already riled up about politics. (so many ads in a super-long video, could have made his point in 4 minutes but let's stretch it to 18 for extra ad $$). Which is ironic because that's exactly what hollywood is doing and why movies suck.

I can explain why movies today suck in one sentence and it's more accurate than what he gets to in 18 minutes. Mainstream movies today are not made with the focus on creativity, they are made with the focus on making money.

Hollywood's focus has always been about making money.

The real trick is identifying a "preachy" movie/show that you agree with. Most often I hear negative critiques of this nature when a movie/show portrays something or viewpoint that the viewer is already predisposed to disagreeing with in a positive light.

How was it preachy?

By preachy, I mean the movie tries to tell us how to live our lives.

The Matrix didn't do that.

It was a 2 hr pro-trans woke fest. It was very preachy that you should live your true life regardless of how uncomfortable it maybe. The secondary villain (cypher) was the one person that wanted to go back in the closet and undo all the progress they had made.

WTF are you even talking about? You got all of that from the movie? Trans crap wasn't even a top 1000 issue back then.

This is bs. The directors tried to make it preachy in interviews years after it came out, but it wasn't at all.

I guess you might think this guy gets it if you think 99% of movies are garbage. That's not going to be a very popular sentiment at all.

Even he said in that interview that it wasn't really that high, it's clearly hyperbole. It's about why MOST of the major studio releases are boring/redundant/crap

Damn. I always thought the Matrix was just about some jerk machines that took over mankind and the people learn kung fu and shoot guns in their fight against the machines.

BS... this seems to be Monday morning QB-ing on their part. I bet they can't provide any proof that this was their intention back them.
