Nothing surprising in there, but needed to be done eventually. Will seems like a pretty decent guy, albeit with some emotional issues and what appears to be a very strange marriage.

Tony Rock looks like a Photoshop of Chris Rock and Will Smith morphed together.

It does seem like he is legitimately trying to understand why he did it and make amends. Some interesting self analysis there.
But it also feels like however wrong it was, it was basically a slap, the world shouldn't be ending over it. He's been appropriately punished. You can just feel the weight of it there for him.

Seems like a good dude who regrets it and wants to make things right. Needs to get his marriage stuff figured out though

Three initial takeaways

1) Will Smith can read!

2) This seems about as authentic as LeBron's decision

3) Jada was definitely right behind the camera cutting her eyes at him with his balls safely stowed in her purse.

Paraphrase: Disappointing / letting others down is my central trauma.

This dude has gotta let himself off the hook. Whatever he has done in life doesn't excuse the mistreatment he has accepted as seemingly ok.

He could, you know, not disappoint people who expect him not to slap someone on freaking live national TV. SUCH PRESSURE

If he never spoke about it, people would complain. It's a lose/lose for him.

This seems to be a genuine apology and I do believe he genuinely feels bad. I think he's got himself into a bad marriage that's caused him to behave in ways not true to himself.

Basically my thoughts exactly. I like Will Smith overall, he seems like a good, decent guy deep down, and I hope he comes out of this a better person at the other end of this. But there's absolutely no doubt this whole thing stems from an f-ed up marriage. Though, when he addressed Jada in the video, it kind of sounded like they hadn't talked in a while or weren't together? Which, if so, would be about the best thing he could do.

All of that said, while I believe this was genuine and inevitable, rumor is, this fall Apple has plans to release Smith's next movie, Emancipation, the one he shot before the slap that's apparently getting a ton of buzz, and this apology was almost assuredly *also* engineered to clear the way for that. In fact, with this now out of the way, I would bet the first trailer is incoming any day/week now.

I read this before I watched the video, and now, after having watched it, didn't get this vibe at all.

Yeah Will's always seemed like a decent guy. That was WAY out of character for him. And it came at literally the moment where he would achieve the greatest award in his career that he'd spent years earning. Now the slap is the first thing people are going to remember, not "Academy Award winning actor Will Smith." Still an incredibly talented guy and I hope he comes out of it a better person.

Cannot help but think of this watching that video though:

Agree to disagree.

I agree from above that this is a lose-lose situation for him, but I didn't like that he divulged the details about him reaching out to Chris without a response from him or his party. That's a part of the narrative that could've been brought up, but not go into as much as he did about it. I feel like that's Chris's part to share.

I do believe he is sincere with his remorse, is a product of his broken household, but am sad that a lot of this is unfortunately interwoven with a PR campaign. I'm still hoping for the best for him as I truly do believe he was one of the better parts of hollywood these last twenty years, which I believe is why this is so scandalous that it was HIM and not someone else who would've made more sense to snap back like that.

I think you might have more people on his side if there wasn't the video of him laughing at the joke originally until he realized it pissed his wife off. He just looked like a guy who realized he made a faux pas at a party, and decided to rectify it by pissing on the floor.

The only thing I really care about the whole debacle is that this doesn't become commonplace where comedians have to actually worry about being assaulted if the crowd decides they don't like their jokes.

Release date is December 2022, so this seems a little early for a trailer, but you're right he needed to get something on record.

Who knows, maybe after having filmed Emancipation Smith was of the mind not to put up with any **** anymore. The plot:

Quote:

After being whipped nearly to death, a slave named Peter escapes from a Louisiana plantation, outwitting cold-blooded hunters led by Fassel, as he makes his way North, where he joins the Union Army.

Meh. The apology first should have been in private with Smith delivering the most expensive bottle of liquor that Rock likes. And then if accepted Rock would be free to publicly say Smith apologized, it was accepted and then everyone move on. It's not Smith's place to make the public statement. That's not an apology. It's a public declaration.
