Myron Grombacher with Pat Benatar. Always loved his playing and style on stage and he had a cool drum set.

Saw him play with Eric Johnson and Chris Duarte. Back in the mid '90s he had a Jazz Fusion band called Hot Buttered Rhythm which had 2 drummers, 2 bass players, and a keyboardist. Saw them play in Austin a couple of times - really good.

Topper Headon from from the Clash and Stephen Morris are two for your consideration.

Doyle Bramhall. Saw him at the old Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth in the mid 90s. Great show!

Roger Taylor of Duran Duran.

Great with both normal and electronic setups, and working with John Taylor manage to create a fantastic rock/pop/dance/disco foundation for most of 40 years.

Basically, this is who taught me how to play the drums. Of course I branched out in later years, but Roger was the one that got me interested in the drums and I learned by playing DD songs.
Years later, I came to understand music a bit better and started to appreciate John Taylor and how the bass and drums interact. There are many days I wished I picked up the bass instead.

he managed to get through the snare rolls in that song by subbing kick and toms..

but I'm guessing he is just out of luck for doing more prominent snare rolls, like in metallica's one for example. Be interesting to see his take on something like that.

Matt Garstka. The stuff he is capable of is just mind bending.

A guy that never seems to get mentioned on these threads is Jojo Mayer. There comes a certain level where you reach kind of a pinnacle of technical skill ( like most of the drummers on this thread have) and beyond that real talent comes from groove and feel (which IMO some of the great technical drummers don't have). Jojo Mayer is an underrated example of unquestionable chops, but also great touch and feel.

Excellent choices. I was just about to mention Stephen Morris. He was excellent before New Order went all "techno." His stuff with Joy Division was excellent.

Probably not "underrated" but best drummer I've ever seen live. Even a couple years ago past his prime he drummed like a maniac for a 3 hour set and smiled the whole time.
