I was in the marching band, and I loved AC/DC, ZZ Top, Yes, Wham, and The Cure. I had a very broad range. I know what you're talking about, though. Sure, that's what I thought at first. But then I listened to "Owner of a Lonely Heart" by Yes a few years ago. I have no conscious memory of having any past nostalgia-worthy experience with that song. Yes, I'd heard it, and I was familiar with it. In HS and college I was a huge Pink Floyd fan. Well actually, I still am. But as a youth I didn't really like the Animals album. I listened to it some back then but didn't really like it much.
I listened to the Animals album a couple of months ago on one of my regular headphone album listening sessions and was blown away. I think I needed some age to really appreciate the lyrics to Dogs, Pigs, and Sheep. Now that I'm older I totally relate to all the songs in ways that I didn't as a young person.
So it's not nostalgia at all. I just got to a point in my life where those songs spoke to me.
And man, what a 4 album run for Pink Floyd in the 70's. Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall. I can re-listen to those albums and they never get old. I would put that 4 album run up against any band's 4 album run.

Also as we get older some songs out there have more stories from them that apply to our lives and we feel connected to them.
Winner Takes It All is one song that I really love now, that I didn't appreciate back in the day.
Animals is my 2nd favorite Floyd album behind Wish You Were Here. I was late to the game on that one compared to their others but it's been a favorite of mine for probably 10+ years now.
I listen to a lot of music now that was before my time ... Sinatra, Dino, etc. It obviously had no appeal to me as a teen-ager but today I really enjoy it. Wish I had all my parents' old records.
The same is true of classic country from the '60s and early '70s.
Conversely, I loved jazz and smooth jazz back in the day. Rarely listen to it now.

For me, as a metal head child of '72, I appreciate zep, Who, Stones, more than I did back then when I was more tied to Iron Maiden and hair metal. These days I still love most of hair metal but there are some that just rub me wrong, namely LA guns and Faster *****cat. I still very much enjoy Dokken, Scorps, Great White, Tesla, Cinderella etc.
I enjoy a lot of new music but it is all of my hard rock/metal genre still. Bands like Eclipse (sweden), Black Stone Cherry, Halestorm, Pretty Wreckless, Inglorious, Dead Daisies, HEAT, Buckcherry, etc.

All garbage then and now. None of these bands could fill Lava Cantina.
Iron Maiden is classic metal, not hair metal.
Crue is one of the worst bands in the history of they world. Yeah, I loved them at 12 and 17, but it's garbage.
Dallas terrestrial radio has ruined listening to tunes by AC/DC, Areosmith, Queen, etc. They play the same 4 or 5 songs over and over and over. I guess these station's program managers think listeners will bolt because they don't play "Living on the Edge" or "For Those About to Rock... We Salute You" for the 1,000,000th time.
These bands have 100s of tunes in their catalogs that never or rarely get played.
I've turned to streaming radio stations from Portland (105.9 The Brew) and Philadelphia (WMMR) to get heavy doses of vintage band's deep cuts and new band's tunes.
i.e. heard the bands like Ghost, Low Cut Connie, Jelly Roll, Dirty Honey way before they make an appearance on Dallas radio
These bands have 100s of tunes in their catalogs that never or rarely get played.

KAOI is quite possibly th3 greatest terrestrial station I've ever heard.
I'll have to check out that station .
