Sesame Street covers the death of Mr. Hooper by explaining what it means to die to Big Bird. If you've ever had to tell a kid that someone or something has passed away, it really hits hard. Really gave the actors on the show a chance to really grieve.

Explaining to Benny we had to put down Dax the cat was probably one of the hardest things we ever had to do.

On the third day of school in my girls' 2nd grade year I had to go get them out of school and tell them that our Golden Retriever was about to die. That will be 3 years ago next week and I can still remember them coming into the office thinking they were going somewhere fun and having to hit them with that news.

I didn't watch the show, but from what I can tell on the youtube clips, the two episodes of 8 Simple Rules following John Ritter's death were pretty rough

Yeah... so many Scrubs episodes could be on this list. The ones that come immediately to mind are:

My Lunch
My Last Chance
My Old Lady
My Last Words
My Finale (Because it was actually a perfect series finale, and pulled at the heartstrings)
And the biggest one of all them, My Screw up

I also agree with the episode of How I Met Your Mother, the Countdown. That was such a punch in the gut at the end, and so well acted. I can't take Marshall saying, "I'm not ready for this." Gets me every time.

Benny and I got into this discussion after Jurassic Bark (been binging Futurama).

Told him for me, it was the episode where Big Bird learns that Mr. Hooper died on Sesame Street.

But I also cried when they had the Finn died episode on Glee.

So what are your saddest tv episodes?

Those first two are really up there.

I'd also add Dr Greene dying on ER.

Agree with Henry Blake's death on M*A*S*H.

My first thought, also from M*A*S*H, was the final episode, particularly seeing the effects of the war on Hawkeye and what he did to that "chicken" or whatever animal he thought it was while hiding from the enemy soldiers.

Yeah. The chicken he mentioned when Sydney had him under hypnosis or something.

ER had strong candidates in it's first 8 seasons or so. Loves Labor Lost from S1 is an all timer, The Healers from S2 I think with the burned fireman, Lucy's death even though everyone disliked the character, and Green's death of course.

Two recent:

The scene in "1883" where Shea is grieving his wife and daughter's death from smallpox, and then burns down the house, was gut-wrenching. Couldn't find a clip.

Also, the scene where Shea is comforting Elsa was pretty emotional, too.

One a little older:

Cutting down Lane Pryce's body on "Mad Men."
