Is Styx just a poor man's Rush?

Styx was one of the biggest bands in the world in their heyday, they had 8 top 10 singles. Rush never had even one, even if mainstream pop wasn't their primary audience.

And I'm probably the only one that has Desert Moon from DeYoung's flop of a solo album on my iPhone. Always loved that title track song. Good video too.

Britney Spears and Beyonc have probably sold more albums. Doesn't make them better.

Rush, Boston, Kansas, Genesis, Styx, and Yes were all my favorite bands in their heyday. I would argue that the closest of those to Rush is Kansas, not Styx.

Just for fun

Lil Wayne and Maroon 5 each have more than 120 MM albums sold. And to be clear I have no clue who Lil Wayne is. Those two just happened to be next to each other in the list.

Meat Loaf had a Billboard #1. Led Zeppelin never did.

Styx never recorded a song with Bob and Doug McKenzie, like Geddy Lee did. So they have that going for 'em.

Bat out of hell was a crazy successful album. It sold 34 million units. Zeppelin's albums were up there too though.
I would actually put Styx closer to Meatloaf than Rush as far as style. Styx were kind of an operatic rock band, though no one leaned into it quite like meatloaf did.

And Eric Cartman has sung songs from both Rush and Styx!!!

If you put Queen, Elton John, Boston, Genesis, and REO Speedwagon into a blender and turned it on high, Styx would be the result.

Only because Stairway was never officially released as a single.

That would not help your argument if you are talking #1 albums. If anything it would hurt it.

And Led Zeppelin had SEVEN #1 albums. Zeppelin IV never made it to the top spot, though.

Styx's current drummer, Todd Sucherman, is on par with Neil Peart. Ridiculous musician.

Saw them at The Woodlands in July. They put on a great show.

Apples and oranges. Rush was clearly prog rock while Styx was pop rock pretending to be hard rock. I actually thought Styx was more of a poor man's Queen because a lot of their Dennis DeYoung songs seemed theatrical and overly dramatic. I still listen to Paradise Theater occasionally; so many good songs.

That was confusing because the discussion was albums sold, not singles.

We saw Styx at the rodeo this year. They killed! I think Rush is the better band but that is with zero disrespect to the musicianship and longevity of Styx. They still had amazing vocals at their age too.

Right but as you said they had plenty of #1 albums. Pretty sure he was referring to singles.

Maybe it's the bias of one of their songs, but I also considered Styx to be more for the blue collar man

I don't know, Rush is for the Working Man that gets up at 7 or 8 and goes to work at 9.

Rush has been awarded 24 gold, 14 platinum and 3 multi-platinum albums. That ranks them fifth behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Kiss and Aerosmith on the all-time list for most consecutive gold or platinum studio albums by a rock band

Renegade too. Forgot about that song. I like that one.

For whatever reason I had Styx, Kansas, REO Speedwagon and Yes all kind of grouped together as rock bands that were just kind of meh. Boston too to some degree. The kind of bands that today have to get together with one or two others on these "classic rock all-star" tours to generate enough interest for larger venues.

Rush never had that problem. The last 20 years of their touring I'm not sure they even had an opening band. Last one I remember was Primus at the Summit in Houston early/mid '90's. They probably had others on subsequent tours I just don't remember.

Ask any upcoming band 10 years ago: you can choose to tour with Rush or you can tour with Styx. You honestly think anyone would choose Styx? If so you're fooling yourself…..

Styx and Rush are two very different bands. But, I love both of them. I play keyboard and drums and I write songs as a hobby.

Dennis DeYoung's (Styx) writing style and music always reminded me of a Broadway Show tune. Very theatrical in nature. Not to say it was bad. Because some of those "theatrical" songs are absolutely beautiful. Styx songs have powerful lead and background vocals. Their harmonies are very good. Great piano. Many of Styx songs focus on piano/keyboard and vocals.

Many of Rush's songs were written by the legendary drummer, Neil Peart. He would develop the drum parts and the band would create a song around it. The drums are very prominent in Rush songs which makes their music have a more "hard and driving" beat than with Styx. The bass guitar playing is more of a complement to what Peart is doing with his bass drum beats than anything.

Both bands had great guitar and keyboard work, but the two are very different in their presentations of those instruments in their songs.
