German-language remake of the 1930 Best Picture winner (if you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it now) based on the classic novel. This looks like it's going to be intense.

[We have cleaned up the multiple derails and ask that posters discuss the movie on this thread. Thank you. -Staff]

Looks pretty good, I hope it doesn't disappoint.

I'm not sure why, but WWI always makes me sad. Such a pointless loss of life.

I will be checking this one out.

Totally agree. Tremendous waste of human life. You learn to distrust humanity when you learn what happened over there.

WWI trench warfare was brutal and such a waste. This movie looks great. The original is fantastic and much more graphic than I was prepared for. Especially for a movie made in 1930.

I will be watching this one for sure.

I think that's the reason you see so few movies about it, especially when compared to WWII. Everything about it is so depressing, especially when you consider that all the major players involved went right back to it a few decades later.

Just saw this at one of the limited screenings at Inwood Theater in Dallas.

Still digesting that experience after a 40 minute drive back to McKinney, which should tell you something. Unfortunately I know some of the impact will be lost being watched on TVs and laptops, but at least in the theater that was a very, very hard-hitting experience. Incredible acting by the main cast, especially the lead. Incredible set design, effects, photography, and score as well. Maybe as time passes and I see it again I'll notice flaws but after that viewing it struck me as a very solid war movie.

It's been a while since I've read the novel but I believe that was a pretty faithful adaptation for the most part. As one would expect it is incredibly graphic, but even having gone in expecting that I was still shocked and mortified by parts. It just hits hard, as it was intended to. I could imagine it might really trigger combat vets, so I'd caution anyone with combat PTSD to use discretion.

That just became arguably the best WWI movie produced to date, certainly better than 1917. I'm trying to figure out where it stands in terms of other war movies in general and it is up there probably in my top 5.

If you can see this on a big screen near you in the next few days, do it. Now I'm going to watch some cartoons before I fall asleep to numb that trauma.

I'm looking forward to it. The 1930 version is terrific so is the 1979 remake with Ernest Borgnine and John Boy Walton. I've been studying a particular Scottish regiment in WWI for the past couple of years and it's still astounding they wore kilts in combat and went over the top with bagpipers into machine gun fire and poison gas. Napoleonic Wars meets the modern day.

there was also an American version with the main character from the Waltons (John Boy)
and Ernest Borgnine.

it was very good. although now obviously dated since it was back in the 1970s

hopefully this one is realistic

Uh, WW II had many more millions of people killed than WWI.

is there a war in your mind that is NOT a pointless loss of life?

for the Triple Entente and the Central Powers, they believed the war was worth fighting just as much as any other war in human history.

This novel is my immediate answer when anyone asks me my favorite book. Dr. Kramer (RIP) at A&M had us read this WWI book to understand why WWII was possible. Dr. Kramer was an A&M professor who taught a class - "The History of Nazi Germany" - for anyone who doesn't know. It took me many registration dial in attempts to get into this class.

If you loved the book you're going to really love this new movie. It's hard to "love" because it really accomplishes the central themes of the book so powerfully and it is acted so well. Painful. As a history fan youll be enthralled. The armored assault in the third act was visually stunning.

It screened for about a week at a few theaters across the country, not sure how many total. Inwood Theater was the only one near me showing it. It was on one of their upstairs kind of smaller, janky screens. I'd pay double to see it on a larger, better screen with better sound. It's really, really good.

Thanks for posting this.

If it wasn't for both world wars, I wouldn't be here to be a first time dad.

My grandfather on my dads side was a Seabee in the pacific theater in WW2. In 1946, he met my grandmother in San Francisco busting up a fight (as an MP). 6 weeks later, they were married and in Texas.

My daughter has red hair. It's because of her great great grandfathers blood line on my moms side that my daughter has red hair (skipped 4 generations). He fought in the trenches in WW1. After starting a family (4 daughters), he killed himself after repeated attempts due to shell shock.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing this as his soulless ginger legacy lives on 105 years after he went. I want to experience a little bit of the hell he lived for a year.

The tragedy of it made me not like this story as a kid. Ill see it though.

Ww1 destroyed america, western europe, and of course the rest of the world, and so far, and probably forever, the world's chance to ever be something close to a utopia. People have no conception of what life could be like today, how good it could be.

The world of 1910 was headed someplace incredible, and they ****ed it all up for nothing.

That was the belief of the time. But WWI showed all of the utopian pipe dreams to be vapor. WW2 and the rest of the 20th century proved it even further. It is why none of the totalitarian/utopian models ever lead to anything but depravity and death and destruction. Human nature cannot be perfected to be peaceful and just.

Just watched it, beautifully filmed and great attention to historical detail. I would not call this AQOTWF, rather a retelling of the story based on characters from AQOTWF. That said, I like that it is not a straight up remake but felt the story is not as strong as the book and other movies. In fact it almost goes to the end of the book at the beginning. There are only a few scenes that are reminiscent of the originals. Definitely shot in a European style and meant to be artsy, but worth the watch besides dragging some times as a result.

I would argue that the closest thing to utopia actually was America and Western Europe just bf ww1.

Ideologies are all 'other peoples money' and all have to be corrupt. The effect of and reaction to ww1 created the age of ideologies - fascism, socialism Communism etc.

At least religions had to try to pay lip service to good intentions.

Ww1 was the end of any chance of a decent world imo.

Also for it being billed as the German version of the film, the credits reveal more Czech names than German.

The most German aspect of it is almost the Nazi propaganda aspect that the Allies were jerks at Compigne, they were but the film emphasizes it.
