Loved this movie!

TC, loved the Texas A&M easter egg. They nailed the personality of the character with that association lol

I went in with low expectations. A bit slow to start, but damn was that enjoyable

Ha, I didn't want to say anything, but yeah, that was so spot on/close to home, it was eerie. At least for a certain type of Aggie. Really, that *had* to have been someone/something lifted directly from his life.

And yeah, overall, the more I've sat with the movie, the more I like it too. Or, rather, for what I initially found to be a relatively low-key Spielberg entry, it's really stuck with me the past few days, to the point where I kind of want to see it again now?

Liked the movie a lot. His behavior as a boy (asking for a toy train set just so he could film it crashing to mimic a movie he saw) reminds me of my son. Guess I need to get my son a camera.

Hope it is good, but thats a dangerous plot line for a movie, and seemed at super high risk of coming out as one of those tone deaf, 'pat me on the back' hollywood insider oscar-scraper-uppers that isnt really very good.

Looks kinda dull.

That terrible haircut is distracting even if his mom had the same cut. It's not like they have the same style face.

this was a movie i've been interested in since the beginning but once i hear terms like "love letter to hollywood" or "homage to filmmaking" i immediately default to this:

Watched the Spielberg documentary on HBO yesterday and it was ok but the only thing I found surprising was the lack of risks he took on the color purple and how bad of an actress Oprah was in that movie.

Crazy how many projects he has going at a time.

Loved Night Gallery when I was a kid, The Cemetary was the best episode…wasn't directed by Steve.

Friend of mine said the Fabelmans was terrible….hmm. Usually has good taste.

I can absolutely understand it not being someone's cup of tea, but it is objectively not "terrible."

He said it was the worst Spielberg movie ever made and basically said this review was spot on

As a Spielberg fanboy, I really enjoyed that. (There is no world in which this is a bad movie.)

My favorite two moments were the meta moments where he tells the bully he'll never make a movie about him, and the very last shot of the movie. Both got huge laughs in the theater.

I can understand some slight criticism in that the plot is a little thin, but this really isn't a plot kind of movie. It's very much a character study, and in that aspect, this movie succeeded with flying colors.

I finally watched this tonight. It was a fine movie with some performances that likely will win some shiny things in coming weeks. Was it Spielberg's best? Hardly. It was a slow moving movie that somehow kept me engaged throughout. I was fascinated in the details - the records he played, the Corning Ware his mom put on the table, the model airplanes hanging in his room, stuff like that, that I felt gave this movie a real feeling. These kind of details grounded it into a familiar reality, and actually helped to divert my focus from the fact that this was Spielberg's personal story where only the names have been changed.

Aside from Judd Hirsch and David Lynch, where this movie shined for me was a somewhat personal connection I felt in watching it, especially early on. I identified pretty well with Sammy after he got the camera. The reason goes back to 7th-8th grade for me, when my mom bought an 8mm camera/projector for me to make movies. Mine were usually psycho killer reels I did with my friends, but I also did a lot of animation with Star Wars figures and models. I actually had a film splicer similar to the one in the movie, but I used a clear tape, not glue, to connect pieces of film. In 9th grade, my counselor had everyone write their college choice on a notecard that she then kept for the next 4 years. I wrote USC since that was where Lucas had gone (Spielberg too. Not sure anymore). Well sometime in the next year or so, I lost that interest I had in going to film school and ultimately decided on MIS at Texas A&M. I know, cool story.

You were Sammy until you were his girlfriend, so you're even more personally connected to the movie than you realize.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. It's definitely a great "details" movie. That's a good way to put it.

Finally got around to watching it and thought it was entertaining, though paced a little weird.

Now, a Best Picture nomination? That seems a little farfetched. I will say, Paul Dano did a great job. It's so weird to see the tall goofy kid from The Girl Next Door kill it in so many great roles.

That ending adjustment of the horizon was a great gag.

I was babysitting last night and happened upon this movie. I began watching just as Mom gave young Sam the camera to film the train wrecks.

I had to leave during the post-prom stuff between Sam and the good-looking bully in the school hallway. I will have to watch the whole thing one of these days.

At any rate, like others on this thread, I was puzzled by the very specific reference to A&M.

Not to be pedantic, but that is a really strange choice of colleges for a young woman from California in 1964.

Women had just recently been admitted to A&M on a "limited" basis in 1963. According to my memory and to Wiki,

Quote:

"The wives and daughters of faculty, staff and students as well as female staff members were finally allowed to officially participate in undergraduate programs..."

It was not until 1965 that a female without the above connections could attend the school.

This is just an interesting thing to me, not a big deal, but I started at A&M in 1967 and the absence of women was very obvious. It is just so strange for Spielberg to single out A&M as the college of choice for this young woman who, in real life, would almost certainly not have been allowed to enroll.

Great movie. Did his girlfriend really leave him for Texas A&M? If so, what was her name?
