I watched the movie Get Out

I recently had about 17 hours of flights back to the US and had watched most of the movies on the flight out so decided to try a few that I wouldn't normally watch.

I had heard that Get Out was very racially charged and obviously that was kind of hard to miss, but all in all I found it to be a good "horror" movie and I liked it. Refreshing to see a new take on the played out "it looks perfect but the small town has a deadly secret" angle.

*spoiler alert*

I also liked how the "grandpa" ran like a sprinter and it seems like there were allusions to him being a Nazi Olympian who started the entire program after getting pissed Jesse Owens beat him in the 1936 games.

I thought it was a good psychological horror movie. Though race was definitely at the center of the movie, I guess I didn't find it to be preachy or anything. I don't know, it just never bothered me.

Thought it was a fresh take on the genre. Incredibly tense and well done. Race was certainly the main vehicle, but I don't think it has any sort of agenda to it.

I thought it was on the nose with the racism.

"My man"
"I would have voted for Obama a 3rd term"
"How much we appreciate Tiger Woods"

It is this pandering and elitism that is the true racism that shows up daily. Yes, there are some purely horrific racists across the spectrum of people, but that subtle "I'm cool with black people" that pervades society is what really divides people into groups or factions. The movie of course goes even further and progresses into how black people are used as props for this "perfect" little community.

People pretend the real "systemic" racists are those dropping the hard R. Of course that exists and should be decried when it rears its ugly head, but Jordan's point with this movie is how racism is subtly experienced all the time when the racists think they are actually allies to the community.

What I hate even worse is the soft bigotry of low expectations when it is just assumed a person is incapable of doing something based on their race or background. aka - voter ID is racists because not everyone (of a certain race) is capable of getting ID. I dare you to go tell a black mother to her face that she is exempt from something because it is assumed she is incapable of performing a task.

I do remember that scene, and especially laughed out loud because it was so on the nose.

Idk. I like the idea of Best Picture nominations coming from other genres, including "horror". I thought it was a very original movie and very cleverly written and filmed. I have no problem with this one being nominated, unless someone were to make a more convincing argument for another movie taking its place.

I don't get why people are stuck on this point (well… I take that back… I actually have a feeling why).

There were 9 Best Picture nominations that year… yet Get Out is the one everybody is puzzled by. Then 2019, there's 8 nominations and only one gets the 'but Best Picture?' question. Take a guess which one…

Oh, don't start that crap. Black Panther isn't even close to Get Out in terms of writing, characters, filming, etc. Green Book won Best Picture, that year, and that was a great movie about a gay black man going through the segregated south with a white driver.

Well, this is the movie being discussed in this thread, so if you want to discuss another specific movie that might be similar that way, have at it. I will likely tell you it was overrated too. Go back through my posts, I have been critical of the academy for their choices across the board, including movies like The Shape of Water. And I'm pretty sure that isn't in the category you seem to want to put me in.
Actually on the subject of race and best picture, I was happy that the year before Hidden Figures got nominated, because telling a story like that which hasn't been told deserved the pub, even if it wasn't the greatest movie ever made. And a billion people worldwide seeing Katherine Johnson onstage being validated was one of the best moments of the last 30 years of that usually god awful production for me.

Didn't even the name the movie, yet you somehow knew which one I was referring to and had a critique of it relative to another picture… just saying…. Didn't name it, but you looked and knew exactly which one I was taking about.

I'm not trying to accuse anybody of anything other than maybe trying to bring some awareness to how much influence certain common news sources and TV personalities have on you collectively.

And to Oragator… OP commented on the movie itself being fun and a spoiler… there was zero real reason for your only comment to be about its merits as best picture.

I think many who would normally be pissed about this type of movie aren't as mad about it because honestly it is a larger critique of white liberalism.

No one seemed surprised when Blackkklansman was also nominated in 2019. Not everything has a tinge of racism to it, and that goes for both sides of the aisle.

All I was basically saying is that it was an ok movie, but way overrated in my view. And the Oscar nom was the ultimate manifestation of that, the love for the movie was rather baffling for me. No different than hundreds of other comments here.

But not going to spend the day arguing over it.

I don't care what anyone says, and this may have been on accident by Peele, but that family reminded me of the classic white east/west coast elitist democrats. The type that tell Texas they are racist if they don't want open borders while demanding the immediate removal of all migrants that are dumped in their communities...and then have the nerve to turn around and talk about how "enriched" they were by the visiting migrants.

The same people who think voter ID laws are "racist" because, well, umm, you see, "everyone knows black and brown people are too incompetent to get ID's like the rest of us".

On purpose, or on accident...the creators really nailed this annoying and hypocritical (and low key racist) uppity white liberal demographic.

It really is a pretty brilliant movie (not just because of that)...and one of very few in recent years to really send chills up my spine.

Come on, man! Black Panther was worldwide famous and debated endlessly on here because of its bogus (IMO) 95% RT score. It's mid-tier MCU for me and had no business being nominated. It was nominated because of politics...especially the politics that were peaking at the time. This is known. And I say that having loved the BP character and Boseman in the role. He was perfect in it.

Get Out was clever and original. Zero issue with it being nominated.

That definitely was the intention. I think he really wanted to get across the subtle racism that white liberals think they are not guilty of because they "champion" black people

It's not just about mocking, IMO, but racism taking all forms. Peele said that putting black bodies on a pedestal is still a form of racism. This movie has a lot of the less blatant things: shaking hands with folks but doing a bro-hug with a black guy, or feeling like you need to bring up Tiger Woods just because he's the one black golfer you know, etc. Things like hitting the automatic lock on a car when a black guy walks by, but not thinking to do so when a white guy walks by.

So IMO it's a really smart and unique setting for what is also an incredibly strong and disturbing horror film.

Same. Thought Get Out was a lot of fun. Us just didn't make much sense (maybe I didn't "get it" I guess) but I thought it was pretty boring. Nope I have sat down with my wife to watch it twice and both of us fell asleep both times. I'm going to give it one more shot to actually get interesting at some point in the movie...
