Agree. Too many other entertainment options.

September 2019 had It Chapter 2, Hustlers, Downton Abbey, Ad Astra, Rambo: Last Blood, and Fast and Furious Hobbs and Shaw for the adults, and Lion King and Abominable (excellent movie BTW) for the kids all going simultaneously. Plus Spiderman Far From Home, Toy Story 4,Angry Birds 2, and Once Upon a Time in Hollwyood were all still out.

There will be big blockbusters several times of year, but we might never get back to the power of the movies post-COVId, it's just what it is. 2022 is already ahead of 2021's entire take for domestic calendar grosses: $5.6 billion to $4.48 billion, but those two combined don't even match up to 2019's $11.36 billion.

Again, the lack of big/quality movies this September was due, more than anything, to Covid. We're still feeling the effects of the tail end of the steep decline in production in 2020/2021.

That said, September has always been a notoriously/historically slow month at the box office. The summer blockbuster months last form May to August, then the studios traditionally pull back in September due to school starting up again, football kicking off, etc. Only in recent years have they taken advantage of Labor Day weekend by releasing It: Chapter 2, Shang-Chi, etc. That, and as alluded to above, there have always been bigger blockbusters released in August, that are still playing/making money in September. But because of the aforementioned Covid woes, we didn't have those big blockbusters this August this year either.

Agree with a lot of posters here it's a combination of skewed numbers from prior years blockbusters combined with everything being more expensive….I'd say we have more opportunity to go to movies now as a family but for a family of 5 to get tickets you're looking at 50-75 bucks alone….not counting if you're wanting to get anything for kids.

We pretty much earmark what movies we want to see ahead of time now with releases being announced so early anyways….for example I know we're gonna pay to see BP 2 and GotG 3….but beyond that not sure what other movies we plan on paying for through the end of 2023….

Anything else we can wait and stream later or rent for much cheaper

Not to straddle here, but I really think it can be both, but not equally. Clearly, there was a lack of compelling products due to Covid, and I think this is the #1 issue (by far). 2021 did decent September numbers, but most of that is Shang-Chi. Remove that film, and last year's numbers are similar to this year's.

Last year, Disney had 3 in September's top 14: Shang-Chi, and summer leftovers Jungle Cruise and Black Widow. This year..Avatar (and Shiva, if you count it as Disney).



I don't think streaming or football or the economy is keeping people home this September any more than last September or Septembers previous to 2020. I think studio decisions on where they invest their resources is making a big difference as plenty of content has been developed for the streaming services. Likewise, someone at Universal though Bros was more worthy of investment than something else. Who knows if they made the right decisions. So the decisions on where to invest (Streaming content or movie content) is hurting the box office.

I just want more weird good **** like barbarian. I don't care if they are niche films. I don't care about the lowest common denominator. I care about new and original.

Haven't seen it yet but I've seen good things about Smile.

I love going to the movies and check showtimes multiple times a month but there just aren't any movies coming out right now that make it worth it to go. I feel like the biggest movie coming out in some weeks would have been straight to DVD in another time. I guess they are low on quality films to put out right now and saving what they have for the better November December weekends.
