This is a riveting watch. Don't even ask, just watch it. Better to watch on a tv, as well.

Just watched it a few days ago. Pretty sobering.

I was to riveted the entire time and was sure he would make it. Sad to hear the ending. Poor guy.

That would make a great Hollywood movie.

Sure would. I thought the same throughout the video.

Hard no for me. I'm very claustrophobic. I didn't get 4 minutes into the video before stopping.

Thought this was going to be about Nutty Putty Cave. Not sure which one was worse after watching that

So what would I have done differently?

1. Maybe extended the exhaust on the diesel equipment. That way they could have used it but the exhaust would not have gone down in the cave.
2. Perhaps used the crowbar to try to chip away at the big rock holding his foot in place? It seemed that he had enough room to possibly do that while he was trying to use the Jack.
3. Possibly install a pulley in the wall of the cave opposite where Collins was lodged. There may not have been enough room, or the wall of the cave may not have supported it. But that way they would have been using the rope to pull him out of the hole rather than up.

Any other ideas?

Completely agree on all of these.

Why they didn't think about using a pulley to get around the bend is really beyond me. As soon as they showed the whole harness thing that's all I could think about. Get a pulley to change the direction you are pulling him!

The other thing I don't get - if this system of caves is as extensive as they say it is, why didn't anyone start searching for a way into the big cave from the other side to get at his feet? Or dug a way into the giant cave behind him that wouldn't have caused his part to collapse more. I know they dug in behind him to get the body out after the fact, but that one seems like it should have been tried much sooner.

I suppose in the midst of it it probably seemed like they'd get him pulled out and there was no need to go to the trouble but it sure seemed like they were really slow to consider things.

Fascinating story and I really was surprised that I sat and watched that whole thing.

I saw on the web that Billy Bob Thornton was trying to make a movie about this in 2009. Not sure whatever happened with that.

There was also a movie based on these events called "Ace in the Hole" from 1951 that was directed by Billy Wilder and starred Kirk Douglas. But apparently it focused more on a reporter than it did on Collins and his plight. The description of the movie is: "A frustrated former big-city journalist now stuck working for an Albuquerque newspaper exploits a story about a man trapped in a cave to rekindle his career, but the situation quickly escalates into an out-of-control circus."

Yes - why didn't they try going in and finding a way from the opposite direction to begin with? Looks like that's how they ultimately got to the body to free the foot and get him out. The story mentions this vast network of caves. Surely they could have found a way in less time than all the other BS they tried.

And do we really need spoiler tags?

Sorry AA01. Didn't read all of your response before posting mine. While watching, I was yelling the entire time, to your point, about the cave system.

Those also could have used some type of strong balloon or bladder fitted underneath the rock and inflated it.

Great idea! Maybe even something as simple as a football or basketball (leave the leather cover on, for strength).

No worries!

There's a lot about that whole situation that made me want to scream at all of them involved. Including the guy for going down there in the first place.

With a little The 33 thrown in.

For those thinking they could have come in from the other way, to this day more than half of the Mammoth Cave complex is still unexplored. The park service has explored 400 mile of it and estimates there in another 600.

That is worse than my precious worse way to go, the boats. I felt so creeper out and gross watching that thinking about how awful it would have been. Holy crap. My heart was racing just at the thought.
