Prime Music just changed from am on demand model to shuffle. You now have the full catalogue, but you can't really pick anything. Thoughts? Personally, I hate it and am thinking of dropping Prime altogether because this reduces the value (to me) while they're bumping up prices (and getting rid of Treasure Truck). I can get free shipping on a huge selection with Walmart+ and pay for Spotify for only a bit more than what Amazon wants for basic Prime now.

when did this happen?
I listen to amazon music everyday, including this morning, and I picked an album this morning and listened straight through.

Are you talking about their "free" service that is included with a Prime sub or the Amazon Music subscription service?

Last week. It doesn't affect Prime Music Unlimited if you have that, but it's an extra $9/mth. Also, if you've purchased music, it should not be affected, though Amazon's rollout screwed up many people's accounts and forced their purchased music into shuffle only playlists.

The "free" one included with Prime, not the added Unlimited.

I found out about this past weekend the hard way as well. I do not like it. I much preferred the old system with the smaller catalogue included with Prime which were available on demand. I'm not accustomed to Amazon taking something away, which is what I feel like happened, even though we now have access to admittedly a lot more music.

I could envision them going to a tiered Prime system, with the highest tier having the entire catalog and more TV options included, and the base being just free 2-day shipping included, with a step or two in between.

I don't think so. For them, it's seemingly more profitable to go all or nothing. Few will pay extra for the very minimal good original content on Prime Video or what is basically Spotify's free service but without ads. If they did only free shipping I'd bump down to that in a heart beat. I think a lot of other people would as well, and their revenues would plummet.

IMO, what they should do is offer a mid tier $3/mth service with on demand access to up to 500 (or something) songs of your choosing. Everything else would be shuffle. They get increased revenues, you get to curate playlists to what you actually listen to without paying $100/yr for 99,999,500 songs you'll never listen to.

I've got some playlists I had previously made and the shuffle mode only plays the songs from within the playlist. Not sure if that's intentional or not because you could make a small playlist and just get songs you want fairly easily it seems.

From what I understand it automatically mixes in "like music" even with curated playlists. I wouldn't know though. All of my playlists were downloaded content and got nuked. With the new platform there's only a few premade playlists you can download to listen to offline. I killed the app on my phone because I'm not streaming all that and killing my data plan as most of the time I'm listening to music while I run out drive. If I want to shuffle songs, that's what the radio is for.

I pay for unlimited, but does anyone notice when you shuffle your music it is perhaps the most god awful shuffle function ever?

If I have 200 songs on my playlist it gravitates towards the same 20 over and over and over again.

I have definitely noticed this.

I found out Sat while trying to skip songs to get to one I really liked on a play list.

Seems the new service included with "Prime" is very similar to Pandora except no commercials.

I don't like it, as I really appreciated the flexibility of the old Prime music.

I have unlimited data, but all ISP's are going to throttle high users when they pass a certain point.

Listening to streaming 24/7 is not gonna be enough to get you throttled on an unlimited plan.

I think I would as well. I did make use of the music, but I think I'll be looking for other options now. I don't really think of Prime Video first when loading something up to watch, unless I've rented something with the credits they occasionally give you for delaying shipping.

My wife and I were sitting by the fire saturday evening and we went from George Jones to Slayer to Metallica to Turnpike Troubadours to Tyler Childers to Queen. She even mentioned it which is why I can recall it happening. Happens all the time to me but I have eclectic tastes. I don't mind the odd whiskeydick song on my McMurty station, LOL.

I can get that kind of variety by just putting Devin Townsend on shuffle.

Amazon Music Unlimited allows you to add a certain number of "family" members you can share the subscription with. Find someone who has it and ask if they'll add you.

I'm on a family plan with my in-laws because my FIL gets a pretty big discount through his job. My BIL uses A LOT of data (I've never understood how, but like 10+ gigs a month) and we get a cap notification pretty often. I probably wouldn't go over it, but as much as I used to listen, I'd probably blow through a couple of gigs a month if I went to streaming.

Either way, the shuffling and switch from on demand is what I hate. Basically ad free Spotify is not a perk that's going to justify Prime's platform cost.

I've noticed this on all music apps. I remember complaining to my buddy years ago about Winamp. Then I had a portable mp3 player, same thing. I can't remember if my old iphone shuffled poorly.

I have started asking Alexa to just play whole albums. Got tired of playing Rolling Stones, for example, and getting the same 8-10 songs but from different releases.

Side note - the podcast - A History of Rock Music in 500 songs available on Amazon Music; started four years ago but still has new episodes and is very enjoyable and nicely done. I started from the beginning yesterday but last week I listened to the episode on All You Need is Love, three hours of great content. Most of the episodes are under an hour. Basically 100 songs a decade starting in the 50's. If you are looking to nerd out on music history.

Asked for OneRepublic, got songs like it that were nothing line it and no OneRepublic.

Asked for Bamboleo by the Gipsy Kings, got Michael Jackson, Harry Styles, John Denver, Elton John, and everything in between.

This shuffle sucks.
