Ever since I was a kid, I've been confused as to why they had a hippie character in a WWII movie, 20+ years before any hippies or talk of positive waves or negative waves existed. Just absurd humor, or was the character Oddball inspired by someone?

It's all about the year that the movie was made and not about historical accuracy. Also, it's a movie.

If you say you hate the state of politics in this nation and you don't get involved in it, you obviously don't hate the state of politics in this nation.

Just like M*A*S*H was set during the Korean war, it was about Vietnam. Doesn't take away from them being good movies though.

great movie...great character.... question already answered, though i will say, the hippie 'movement' didnt happen till the 60's, but there is nothing new under the sun, and i guarantee you somewhere in ww2 there was a real 'oddball.'

that type of flake just didnt make the movies in the 40's
