No ads / commercials, play YouTube in the background on a mobile device, and a music app that I don't use.

Interesting, I double checked and it looks like mine is still $11.99, but I don't have a family membership. Wonder if just the family is increasing?

The big benefit we use is being able to download videos to a device we use that a lot for our kiddo.

I got YouTube TV for football season so that's about $100 month going to YouTube from me.

Recognizing that I watch more youtube than anything else - but the fact it's multiple times as much to Netflix/HBOMax/Disney+.....won't get it.

I recently found out that if you subscribe to YouTube Premium through your Apple subscriptions, they charge you more. I was being charged $15.99 through Apple for my individual subscription. I cancelled that and re-subscribed directly through my YouTube account and it's $11.99

I think it's because Apple takes a cut. YouTube isn't the only app that incentivizes users to not subscribe through the app.

This is correct. That's why Netflix won't let you sign up via your app on an iPhone. They require you to use a browser on mobile or a PC to signup because if you use the app Apple would get a cut.
