What's the Scientology position on medical care for cancer? Because that's two of their big celebrities who have died from cancer in the last year or so.

That's awful, she was a great actress and seemed pretty down to earth minus the scientology thing

She was outstanding in Cheers (a huge upgrade from Shelley Long).

35(!) years ago.

Hard to believe she was already 71. Where has the time gone?

Agreed. Would have never guessed she was that old.

I had no idea she was 71. I figured she was about 10 years younger.

Here's my Kirstie Allie story.

Back when the kids were in Elementary School, we used to take them Trick or Treating around Toluca Lake (never made it to Jimmy's house but I figure Bonnie was probably working the night shift at the hospital anyway).

The Bob Hope house was a big draw since they gave out customized souvenirs every year.
https://www.iamnotastalker.com/2011/10/11/bob-hopes-former-housea-trick-or-treating-mecca/

We took the kids through a few streets and one of the houses they went to turned out to be Kirstie Allie's house. Now what kind of candy do you reckon Kirstie Allie was handing out?

The answer is none.

What she was handing out to the kids who stopped by her house was - Scientology pamphlets. At that point, I didn't know she was a Scientologist. Turns out they're everywhere out here in LA.

That's because she ate all the candy.

Sorry, I had to. May she RIP.

I remember that last sitcom she had....maybe she was a fashion designer?...being pretty decent.

I'm going to guess if I watched it now I would laugh at my opinion here.

I think that good looking dude named Dan from MTV was on it. #nohomo Talk about someone that disappeared. Whatever happened to him?

You piqued my curiosity.
Dan Cortese - looking through his IMDb, looks like he did a few episodes of 8 Simple Rules in 2004. I never ran into him on the Disney Lot, not that I would have recognized him. David Spade on the other hand.

Alley had a fun cameo on a late season episode of "King of Queens" which poked fun at her weight issues. She played a client of Carrie's real estate firm who can't eat because of her diet, but wants Carrie to eat for her so she can watch.

This was obviously before Alley and Leah Remini had a big falling out due to Scientology.

she still seemed young on her last reality tv show-

a good sense of humor about being fat and not a movie star.

seemed like a really cool mom and she was a big Republican in Hollywood.

RIP- that's a big loss for the good guys.

strangely I never remember Alley as being a huge Scientology evangelical like Cruise or Travolta or Remini (before she turned against them several years ago)

I'm guessing he's referring to Kelly Preston.

Well, Kelly Preston went all in on her treatment at MD Anderson. So I'm guessing they're OK with it.

Did she go all in when it was diagnosed or once it progressed to a very symptomatic point? I'm not an expert on Scientology, but they do have these weird beliefs about what people can do at the highest levels of their religion.

I don't know for certain, other than it was reported that she was undergoing treatment "for some time".

It would seem strange to me given these actors clearly have no problems with plastic/cosmetic surgery. Think if you're willing to accept the medical field for vanity you wouldn't have objections about using it to fight a life threatening disease. But I know basically nothing about Scientology and maybe they have some odd loopholes.

Yeah I thought their hang-ups are mostly with the field of psychiatry and not the entire medical industry.

Some other early works:

Loverboy -- one of Patrick Dempsey's clients
Shoot to Kill -- great action / buddy "cop" movie with Sydney Poitier and Tom Berenger

And don't forget the greatness / awfulness of Runaway with Gene Simmons

She was in North and South, also. She played George's sister, Virgilia. That's where she and Parker Stevenson met.

Probably confused with Christian Scientists. Those are the anti-medical freaks.

She was very good in that part. Played a complex character very well.

In fact those were good books (at least the first two). No way you could write (or produce for tv) something like that today that did a fairly good job of showing the complexity of life in that period. Specifically around slavery.
