David Spade and Dana Carvey have a podcast out called "Fly on the Wall," and they've spent a majority of their episodes interviewing comics and old SNL co-workers. They recently released a two part episode (multiple hours) of Farley stories where they interview people who worked with and knew him, including his mother. It's great.
That's a really good podcast. By choice or by fate, Dana Carvey is one of the most criminally underrated comedians of the last 50 years.
Master of Disguise pretty much crushed his remaining career
Oh, was it not turtley enough for you?

Farley had such an interesting innocence to him beyond the need to be class clown. I definitely could see him taking on some serious role later in life and getting nominated for an Oscar.

Losing him and Phil Hartman in a 6-month span to non-natural causes was a really miserable time. Hartman was 50 at the time, Farley just 33. The years of laughter and love they could have brought past their demises is miserable to think about how we all missed out on.
I agree that he could have gravitated towards more serious things as his career went on.

Count me in the group of people that think it's much harder to be funny than it is to be dramatic. I think it also takes a much smarter actor to pull off comedy than drama. That is a sweeping generalization I admit, but as someone who spent many years as an actor and producing shows, comedy is infinitely more difficult to get right than drama.

Anyone that can be funny can be dramatic.

Not necessarily the other way around.

There's a ton of great examples of comedy actors who turned to drama (Hanks, Cranston, Carrey, Sandler), but what are some of the best dramatic actors than can do comedy?

There's less great ones standing out. Colin Farrell?

John C. Reilly is the gold standard

Leslie Nielsen was in all serious roles until Airplane.

I just listened to BIll Simmons podcast "The Rewatchables" on Stepbrothers and they talk about how Will Ferrell is in his absolute movie prime in that film and Reilly matches him punch for punch and how incredible that is for a guy who had been in almost non-stop drama roles before Talladega Nights.

Liam Neeson's greatest role ever was in Ted 2.

Was Ryan Reynolds really drama then comedy? Or always comedy/action? Because I think he is pretty damn funny now.

Hemsworth? Dude is legit funny and has serious potential if he stays this route. I think Taika put him on the path and he loves is, could be wrong.

There are so many like Harrison Ford or Connery that if they indulged themselves could have an alternative career as being legit funny.

If you haven't heard the story about Farley and David Spade's girlfriend in Playboy it's pretty insane. This whole video is good but that story starts around 2.22.

Ryan's first break was Van Wilder.

His humor has grown up with him, but his wit and schtick hasn't really changed that much.
