I remember renting this movie at the video store back whenever it came out on video. Renting a movie was my task while my mom was in the grocery store.
I got in the car and told my mom I rented The 'Burbs and she heard, "The Birds" and flipped out because that one scared her long ago of grackles/crows etc and we were all aware of her fears and it was not even funny (yet.)
I know, story time, but the little memory of that made me smile.

She's aged really well too:Faustus said:
Bruce Dern's wife, Wendy Schaal, was even hotter than Carrie Fisher.
Nice cinematography.

Saw this when I was about 9 or so with my older cousins. Loved it, but it also scared the crap out of me at times.Nagler said:
Saw part of this when I was little, mainly the part where they show a clip of some movie with Jason (or someone) busting through the wall on the stairs. I noped right out and started sprinting up the stairs at the house. That's all I've got to say about that.

I think it's a combination of his inflection, and the line that Carrie fisher said when he responded.Drawkcab said:62strat said:

I don't remember much about this movie, but I'm quite certain this line didn't originate with it. Seems like a common phrase.
On Netflix right now.Cinco Ranch Aggie said:
I missed this when it came out, was focused on my classwork so I could graduate on time. Never saw it, but reading this thread, I'd like to. Short of buying a DVD (have not done that in a while), what viewing options are there for this? I've looked on iTunes, Amazon, et al but have found that this title is not available for viewing in this region (US, Texas, Houston)

Good movie. I laughed quite a bit at it. The little white dog (I found a reference to this dog on imdb that said it was the same dog that appeared in The Silence of the Lambs) coming over to Bruce Dern's yard and dropping a deuce was hilarious, but then much of the dialogue was also over the top goofy funny. I also found it interesting that it was shot entirely on the Universal lot, and I believe the Hanks/Fisher house was the same used in Leave it to Beaver, and the house of the creepy neighbors was used in The Munsters.Teslag said:Cinco Ranch Aggie said:

Curious to get your thoughts on it with someone watching for the first time
Yeah, I watched this last night as well for the first time. I've never seen Joe Versus the Volcano, nor The Money Pit which all came out within a few years of each other. After watching The Burbs, I figure I might as well watch those others.rednecked said:I just watched it on NetflixCinco Ranch Aggie said:

I generally enjoy Tom Hanks movies and this was all right. I will always think his greatest movie is Joe versus the Volcano. I will watch that one over and over.
