Mark Rumsfield might have the highest quotable lines to dialogue ratio in any movie ever.

I remember this movie scaring me as a kid. They do a really great job building suspense and never really showing you much of the neighbors or the house. Your imagination does most of the work and makes the house way scarier than it ever was.

Just turned it on for the first time since I saw it in theatres in 1989.

Impressive Google Earth first shot for 1989. Well done.

I paused it to post this.

I remember renting this movie at the video store back whenever it came out on video. Renting a movie was my task while my mom was in the grocery store.

I got in the car and told my mom I rented The 'Burbs and she heard, "The Birds" and flipped out because that one scared her long ago of grackles/crows etc and we were all aware of her fears and it was not even funny (yet.)

I know, story time, but the little memory of that made me smile.

Any who has ever seen that movie gets trepidation whenever they see a group of black birds.

Before I was born, my dad was on a business trip and mom called a neighbor for help because birds were landing in our yard in a creepy fashion. It was legit in the 70s.

Nice cinematography.

Any movie starring Brother Theodore is a great movie. He was great on Letterman. Funniest weirdo ever.

While watching it for the first time at work today, I realized that his buddy is the guy from Groundhog Day.

I know it was posted but I wasn't watching, and I was like, I know that voice!

Saw part of this when I was little, mainly the part where they show a clip of some movie with Jason (or someone) busting through the wall on the stairs. I noped right out and started sprinting up the stairs at the house. That's all I've got to say about that.
Saw this when I was about 9 or so with my older cousins. Loved it, but it also scared the crap out of me at times.

i love 80's movies like this.

I missed this when it came out, was focused on my classwork so I could graduate on time. Never saw it, but reading this thread, I'd like to. Short of buying a DVD (have not done that in a while), what viewing options are there for this? I've looked on iTunes, Amazon, et al but have found that this title is not available for viewing in this region (US, Texas, Houston)

I don't remember much about this movie, but I'm quite certain this line didn't originate with it. Seems like a common phrase.

I think it's a combination of his inflection, and the line that Carrie fisher said when he responded.

Me: [Gets up and heads to the bathroom]

Wife: Where are you going?

Me: I can't walk anywhere without you asking me where I'm going? I'm going to Paris, France, okay? I'm going to Banff, Canada.

I generally enjoy Tom Hanks movies and this was all right. I will always think his greatest movie is Joe versus the Volcano. I will watch that one over and over.

Good movie. I laughed quite a bit at it. The little white dog (I found a reference to this dog on imdb that said it was the same dog that appeared in The Silence of the Lambs) coming over to Bruce Dern's yard and dropping a deuce was hilarious, but then much of the dialogue was also over the top goofy funny. I also found it interesting that it was shot entirely on the Universal lot, and I believe the Hanks/Fisher house was the same used in Leave it to Beaver, and the house of the creepy neighbors was used in The Munsters.

The creepy neighbors gave it a bit of a comedic horror element. For a bit, that made me think this movie didn't really know what it wanted to be, then I recalled what else the director had made - a segment of The Twilight Zone movie, and Gremlins. Both of those were comedic horror type movies that I had enjoyed, and this one was in a similar style.

I also noted that every time Bruce Dern did something, he was accompanied by some music that was almost Patton - Jerry Goldsmith did that score, as well as this one.

I liked the cast. Corey Feldman was clearly grown up as opposed to his appearance in Gremlins and other earlier movies in the 80s, but he still fit the part of a teen character living on this cul-de-sac. Bruce Dern was hilarious, first time I recall him in a comedic role; I usually associate him with Black Sunday wanting to murder everyone at the Super Bowl. His wife was smoking hot. As 10-year-old me once told my mom that I was going to marry Carrie Fisher, she was incredibly gorgeous still in this movie. As for Tom Hanks, I see that guy as a tale of two different actors. At this time, I would have called him strictly a comedic actor, with Splash, Big, and Dragnet, and I never would have seen him morphing into a more serious actor for movies like Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can, Bridge of Spies, Cast Away, or even A League of Their Own in his future.

Yeah, I watched this last night as well for the first time. I've never seen Joe Versus the Volcano, nor The Money Pit which all came out within a few years of each other. After watching The Burbs, I figure I might as well watch those others.

Don't forget Hanks also had Turner & Hooch in 1989

It's a great movie as well.
