I know it's been nine months, but what are your thoughts? Was it too long, too short, or fair? I think he should have been banned for five years instead of ten.

They should have kicked him out of the theater that night and stripped his Oscar.
He won the Oscar for his acting ability, so the slap doesn't change the fact that he's a good actor.

I know someone who got ten years probation and 71 days in jail for manslaughter, so his probation is the same length as Will Smith's ban. I also know someone who got ten years in prison for sexual assault, so his prison sentence is the same length as the ban as well.

I thought it was interesting that his ban was the same length as their sentences. It would be funny if the length of his ban was inspired by their sentences, since they were sentenced before the slap incident, but that's obviously not the case.
Anyone else think his ban was too long?

Until it fades from memory, every Oscar might be filled with who he gonna slap next memes and jokes, which may overshadow the event. Guess they decided to play it safe and ban him for a good long time.
It's still surreal if you think about it. Full slapping somebody while the world is watching.
My colleagues on the call from various cities in India that night were all talking about it. They were as shocked and disbelieving as we were.
Ten years seems excessive, cause he's banned until April 2032. Five years would have made more sense, and people wouldn't be talking about it as much in 2027. Maybe seven years at most.

Yep, I'm assuming it can be reduced if he keeps showing remorse and Chris Rock forgives him, and actually advocates for his return.
If he didn't slap Chris Rock, but he still cursed at him, do you think he would have been banned for just the next Oscars, or do you think he wouldn't have been banned at all?

i don't really care one way or another, but i think if he had been immediately apologetic and remorseful, he would not have been "punished" so harshly. his reaction in the moments, hours and months after the incident more than justify a ban of however long the academy wants.

Sounds like you need better friends.
He should be removed from the Academy. But director Randall Miller was found guilty of manslaughter from the accident on Midnight Rider and he is still a member of the Directors Guild of America. He even has directed another movie that was a DGA signatory outside the US. At the national meeting two years ago there was a huge uproar about this and the board said they don't remove members.

Early on I was convinced this was a bot account. Someone I trust told me it's not but there are times when I'm not so sure.
They're not my friends, but I know them. Also, the manslaughter charge was because of a car crash where he was driving 87 in a 45 (he wasn't drunk or on drugs), not whatever you're thinking.
I'm not comparing them (prison and probation are obviously worse than being banned from the Oscars), I'm just comparing the number of years, since it's the exact same number.
Actions do have consequences, which is why he was banned from the Oscars, but his Oscar shouldn't be taken away, because he earned it for his acting ability. For example, if someone wins a spelling bee, and when they're told they won, they say that everyone who lost is a f***ing dumbass, they shouldn't lose their trophy because they rightfully won it. Maybe they should be banned from participating in future spelling bees instead.
