I love the top comment on instagram: "This is the best damn SEC network pre game hype video I've EVER seen"

Was a bit meh starting off, but liked it more as it went on. Wasn't a huge fan of the last one, so hope this album is back to form

same here. Sounds pretty similar to his more recent stuff so we'll see.

I just feel like his newer stuff sounds fine for the most part, but forgettable.

It's Isbell so I'll give it a thorough listen and a fair shot but his last couple albums have fallen short for me.

Probably due to just how good his older stuff was and setting the bar so damn high, but forgettable is a great description for his recent music.

I like how the weathervane only has South and East on it. Nice touch.

I hardly think his latest albums are forgettable, just hard to follow two masterpieces like Southeastern and Something More Than Free.

that's probably fair. The Georgia album shouldn't really count in any case.

For me at least, the most recent show at 713 was (obviously) very Reunions heavy, and the only song that really excited me to hear was Dreamsicle.

Maybe I'm just getting old.

Reunions took some time to grow on me, but it's gotten there. St. Peter's Autograph is one of my favorite songs of his.

That's kinda how I feel. Southeastern & Something More Than Free are about as good as you can get. The Nashville Sound actually really really grew on me and for me, it's just a hair below the previous two. I never really came to love Reunion in the same way, however, I think it's still solid with a handful of great songs. I've learned to never judge an Isbell song till you've listened to it several times with some time between listens. Sometimes stuff pops out in the music or lyrics that just didn't land till you've had time to absorb it.

it is a pretty song for sure. Thought about mentioning it as well.

I heard a song on WUMB the other day and thought it was Isbell at first.

Turns out it's a new Alabama artist and has some of the 400 Unit playing on the album, so not a total shock

very true. Some of my favorite lyrics were things I didn't catch until much later (like years in some cases).

No doubt he's a brilliant writer.

Yeah, the first time through Reunions I wasn't totally sold, but over the last couple of years I have grown to love it. There are a few songs on it that are far from his best, but even Isbell's "average" stuff is better than 95% of music.

I'm excited to see what this record has in store. And from some things I have read, we are likely to get a live Southeastern recording (maybe documentary?) this year for the 10th anniversary.

Liked the beginning of the song in the YouTube link but didn't like that it sped up around 1:30 in

Decided to make it a Reunions type afternoon. Some great lines in these songs.

"I saw you in our daughters eyes last night when she caught me in a lie, and I need you here to make both of us believe." - Overseas

"The river is my savor, she's running to the sea, and to reach her destination is to simply cease to be. And running til your nothing sounds a lot like being free. So I'll lay myself inside her, and I'll let her carry me," - The River

"If your words add up to nothing then you're making a choice to sing a cover when we need a battle cry."- Be Afraid

Also the last song tears me up as the father to a daughter.

When you sit down and really listen to Dreamsicle right into Only Children, it really is Isbell damn near the top of his game. Just phenomenal storytelling.

Only Children is classic Isbell.

I also love the guitar in Running with Our Eyes Closed. Very Dire Straits-y

Good find. Sadler Vaden hit it out of the park on Morgan Wade's last album, and I'm interested to see what he does here.

Every now and then an incredible artist somehow escapes one's notice. Jason Isbell was one for me. Never heard of him until this thread and I've been listening to his albums on YouTube nonstop for two days now. What a songwriter and performer!

Thanks.

What I'd give to get to listen to Isbell for the first time again. If I had to offer a personal top 5:

-Speed Trap Town
-Different Days
-Streetlights (just a gut punch)
-Last of My Kind
-Flagship

Granted, this list might change weekly.

If there was a list of artists I could go back and hear for the first time again, Isbell would easily be in the top three, if not number one.

Have any of y'all listened to his Live from Welcome to 1979 album? It's a vinyl only covers album, including one of my favorite renditions of Atlantic City.

Love seeing Streetlights on that list. That album is my favorite of his early ones. They butchered the album on the vinyl reissue though. The mix totally took the "rock" out of the album and they changed the track list which is unforgivable.

Luckily I still have it on CD though so I can still listen.

I never felt like I was getting old until I listened to that song

"Time moves slow when you're 17 and then it picks up steam at 21. Pretty soon you'll remember when you could remember when you loved someone"

This video is from a long time ago and he was still in the throes of dependency issues. But this is my favorite version of the song.

Bonus Drive By Truckers acoustic from the same setlist

For my money ******* Lonely Love is one of the best songs ever recorded.

Some of my other favorites

Decoration Day
Outfit
Elephant
Codeine
Stockholm

Honorable mention because he didn't write it - Heart on a String

And while he gets a ton of credit for his songwriting Isbell can absolutely shred on a guitar. I think he's just as good on a guitar as he is with a pen.

Nailed it top to bottom.

I would only add Alabama Pines to the song list.

Saw them live once and they ripped Never Gonna Change (DBT) in an encore that was one of the coolest dueling guitar performances I've seen. Check out the version from an older Brooklyn show on YouTube

Also, the Live from Alabama album rocks. He's great love.

Random $.02 - Back when he was still kinda fat, he seemed to be less holy/sanctimonious and just more into the music.

*********Lonely Love is amazing.

I first heard it from the "Live From Alabama" album and loved it as what I felt was a rocking, swaying, song about a guy missing his girl.

Then I heard the original Drive By Truckers version and it knocked me on my ass. I really listened to the lyrics and realized what a devastating song it is about a guy drinking and whoring himself to death. Every time I put on The Dirty South I have to move the needle at the end to listen to GDLL twice.

Just a great example of how sometimes it takes years to really LISTEN to his lyrics and get them.

That one also had some real Fleetwood Mac energy considering he wrote it for his wife at the time, who was also the DBT bassist

I'm splitting hairs and your point still stands. But a lot of people can shred at his level, very very few can write songs at his level.

Yeah no doubt. I agree on that

I just remember first listening to Isbell and blown away by his son writing then seeing him play live and appreciating how well can play and perform as well.

Just think his songwriting ability overshadows his playing and performing ability.

Nice. Was wondering when I clicked the trailer if we'd get any DBT representation, was neat seeing Patterson in there
