Always love seeing Isbell and DBT getting love on here. I've been listening to them since Jason was still in the band. I even have a DBT tattoo that three people in 10 years have recognized.

I couldn't even begin to make a top 5 of either. So many great songs to choose from.

Nailed it top to bottom.

I would only add Alabama Pines to the song list.

Saw them live once and they ripped Never Gonna Change (DBT) in an encore that was one of the coolest dueling guitar performances I've seen. Check out the version from an older Brooklyn show on YouTube

Also, the Live from Alabama album rocks. He's great love.

Random $.02 - Back when he was still kinda fat, he seemed to be less holy/sanctimonious and just more into the music.
I feel like his wokeness is mostly driven by his wife.

While I was never that into them, I did see them before they were big around here, along with about 10 other people at Rudyard's sometime after Southern Rock Opera came out. Based only on the memory of that show, I was a bit surprised by how big they eventually got.

Looking at the past tour dates on their site, it's fairly shocking to see how long ago that was. I had better hair than the damn entertainers back then!

sidenote: King of the Hill episode "Redneck of Rainey Street" is on right now, featuring a DBT cover of Tom Petty's "Rebels."

i saw a tik tok that says you can tell everything about someone based on one question....

What do you think of Jason Isbell?

WTF does this mean?

I remember seeing an interview with BJ Barham where he was talking about how he and Jason Isbell became friends prior to Isbell agreeing to produce Burn, Flicker, Die. The two things they had in common aside from being musicians were heavy drinking and liberal political views.

Love his music, but listening to him constantly open 'Outfit' with the story of how he won't play the song if people call it out is rivalled in ******y-ness only by his former-friend Ryan Adams constantly lecturing fans about lights on their phones rather than just putting on a damn pair of sunglasses.

Speaking of Ryan Adams, sounds like his "cancelling" has somewhat subsided as I noticed he's touring at major venues again (with the Cardinals).

Not to derail a great thread too much but that's what bugs you about Ryan Adams?

Did you guys know I love Jason Isbell?
I used Outfit in classes to teach refrains in poetry.

You should switch it up and teach "Super 8" every other semester

Saw him at ACL Live back in November and it was pretty cool. Acoustic show and three hours straight of music. Right around 31-32 songs. He's a piece of ****, but he can play and write songs.

Can you post an excerpt or non-paywall version? Out of free articles and don't particularly want to subscribe to the NYT

I *did* know Ryan Adams was a piece of ****

Long story short, he was pretty manipulative with up-and-coming female artists looking for guidance and help to break into the scene. A lot of quid pro quo stuff. He'd invite them to write music and cut a record, but he just wanted to lay pipe. And then once these women set professional boundaries he'd just ghost their ass. Supposedly treated his ex-wife pretty poorly, too.

Then there was the whole thing where he was sending dick pics and having weird convos with a 15-year-old girl. And he was like 40.

Friendly bump as the album dropped today. This blows "Reunions" out of the water IMO.

There are a lot of good tunes on the album, but my personal top five tracks:

Cast Iron Skillet
King of Oklahoma
Strawberry Woman (shoutout Post, Texas!)
When We Were Close
This Aint It

This is a solid album. IMO there isn't a skip on it.

My personal favorites are King of Oklahoma, This Ain't It, and Volunteer.

Totally agree with everything you have here.
King of Oklahoma! Wow, how do you make a catchy sing-along about drug addiction? I'm walking around just humming that tune.

Save the World, I listened to it once, and probably will skip that one every time.

Very Solid Album! classic Isbell, the more spins, the more it grows on me.

Enjoyed my first playthrough, definitely feels like a return to form after the last one. This one also feels more country to me than his last few.

Think I like "This Ain't It" the most, but we'll see how it evolves with more listens.

This one is taking longer to grow on me than Reunions, which I really liked .

I feel like lyrically it's as good as ever, but musically there isn't a song that just jumps out at me. I do like him playing around a little with the songs, like Miles having those two kind of sections at the end is fun.

Also I feel like the production is a bit off, specifically with his voice. I wish it was more upfront and clear. He doubles his vocals in a lot of places where I don't think he needs to. He's got a great voice and just needs to let it shine more.

That's all after 3 spins though. Each spin I like it more, so I am sure it will continue to grow on me.

I've been enjoying it as well. "When We Were Close" is a nice tribute to Justin Townes Earle.

So far, a line thats made me smile was "he's got square-toed boots so he ain't for real" off Strawberry Woman.

I try not to judge or determine how I feel about Isbell records until I've given them some time. But so far im liking it.

Exactly my thoughts.

I really like Reunions. Not finding many hits on this release and some of the vocal tracks are slightly off.

It's grown on me a lot the more I listen to it. Digging it.

"This Ain't It" is a highlight and I'd love to see that one live and watch Sadler and Jason do the dueling guitars on the bridge live. That would be a fun jam to watch.

I actually prefer it to Reunions.

White Beretta, King of Oklahoma, Middle of the Morning are some of my favorites.

Love how he's not afraid to meander into some solos on the later tracks. Has a nice 70's vibe.

I didn't love his first single (Death Wish) but thankfully it doesn't represent the sound of the album

I'm a fan of Reunions and I think this album tops it by a pretty wide margin. As others have said, there are no skips on this record and the songwriting is phenomenal across the board.

I enjoyed the album on first listen, but over the last couple of weeks I have gotten really really into it. To me it is a great mix of modern Isbell with some old school DBT-esque Isbell as well.
