I am rewatching Gangs of New York which reminds me of what a tremendous actor Daniel Day-Lewis was. I think he should be included in any list of the greatest actors of all time. I am still perplexed by his decision to walk away from acting six years ago. Has there ever been a major film actor of his caliber that just walked away from the industry without looking back? Every other actor I can think of works as long as they can still get acting roles.
Crazy to see him walk away while still in his prime.

Maybe not, but as selective as he was with his roles and the extent of which he would envelop himself into those roles would wear most people out. Plus he was entering his 60s

He had quit for a while before Gangs of New York to be a cobbler of all things. I wonder if this time is for good, or if he'll get that itch to return like last time. He certainly is a wonderful actor, though I don't know that I'd want to be on a set with him, even if his antics seem quite a bit more harmless than Jared Leto's.

His career went for about 40 years before retiring. I'd say he had a great run.

He was also method AF, and not in the awful creepy Jared Leto way. That likely got old over time.

Even in his prime he was pretty selective on his roles and it wasn't uncommon to go years without working.

Anyways, I agree. He's one of the greatest of all time.
