Townes Van Zandt wrote some real songs man,

I'd put him in that top tier.

I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and tell him to his face that Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter--Steve Earle

(May not have the quote word for word but it's something like that)

Not the greatest country & western song, just the perfect country & western song. Besides, you have to give DAC an assist there.

Self proclaimed perfect country and western song, but that has been disputed.

Prine is an uncredited co-writer on that as well. Apparently he and Goodman wrote it one night with some liquid inspiration, but Prine didn't want his name on it. This story about Prine always amazes me:

First 3 songs Prine sang on stage: "Sam Stone," "Hello in There" and "Paradise."
"In 1970, 23-year-old John Prine was a mailman who sang his original songs on open-mic night at a Chicago folk club called The Fifth Peg. The first three songs Prine sang on stage were "Sam Stone," "Hello in There" and "Paradise." No one in the audience applauded. They simply stared."

Can you imagine being in that audience? Or the poor schmuck that had to follow that on an open mic night? Actually, I can sorta relate to that poor schmuck. In 2001, after confirming one week that most of the open mic performers at the Mucky Duck in Houston were low talent hacks like myself, I came back the next week with my guitar and signed up for the second time slot. Who signed up for the first? Hayes freakin' Carll.

Lionel Richie deserves some love here.

Eight #1 hits written solely by him. Only Diane Warren has as many.

PMC apparently has 9… in addition to 23 with Lennon. Clearly their sum was greater than their parts.

Most were with wings, which has Linda as a co-writer, but come on, we know who wrote those songs.

Two great mentions.

To me, a great songwriter isn't just a dude with great lyrics, you've got to have some killer riffs and/or melodies behind it. I really don't care for "storytelling" music. I'll read a book for that, thank you very much.
And it doesn't need to be "deep" to be great either. Blitzreig Bop and Black Dog are great songs too.

Give me a good mix of both I suppose. Neil Peart and Dee Dee Ramone for the win!
