I agree with "meh". We watched tonight on Paramount. Just didn't have the soul to it that the original did. Not ever close. Not much else to say. That's a one and done for me.

Honestly, for the big names associated with it, kind of seemed like a money grab.

what about the part where his character didnt mesh at all with the rest of the characters on screen, both in how he talked and how he behaved?

I don't understand the praise at all for Denzel in this film. His performance was flat to me. And too minor as to what it could have been. And I say that as a big Denzel fan. Again, meh.

Watched it last night. Somewhat enjoyed the first 45 minutes and then it just kind of fell off a cliff after that.

Denzel's performance was just okay.

Lead Actor performance was meh at best.

This movie was awful and I agree with urban ag, Denzel was very mediocre to me.

And I know it wasn't, but something about the whole thing felt very cheap to me.

Both arena scenes in the original were vastly superior to this version 2. The storyline was just too unoriginal, not unlike The Force Awakens. The new characters sucked for the most part although Pascal was not bad but like Denzel, totally unutilized. The new kid had no charm. The twins were stupid. Channel some GOT or HOTD for maniacal young *******s in charge. FFS.

Yeah, I held back. I won't say it was awful but I was so ready for it to be over. Bleh.

Watching right now. I knew that it would fail to live up to the greatness of Gladiator, which is why I skipped this one in the theater. Visually, it is superb. Ridley Scott has always excelled with this, even in the weakest of his films. I like some of the actors - Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, and Pedro Pascal - but no one else seems up to the task. When the original came out in 2000, I am pretty sure I had never heard of Russell Crowe or Joaquin Phoenix, yet those two drew me right in to that film's events. Not so with this film. The opening with the Roman fleet attacking the city gave me vibes of the Siege of Syracuse from the time travel portion of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, but that sequence was far more entertaining. Gladiator II is actually somewhat boring, at least up to the point that I am at, the rhinos in the Coliseum. So far, meh.

I agree with the "this movie has no soul" type comments...because it doesn't. Its a bit of a bore despite the great action scenes. It just doesn't do a good job to make you CARE about any of those action scenes.

The sets seemed cheap and shallow like for the first time I could tell that so little of the actual set was real. The sharks were utterly ******ed. Denzel acted like he was in training day part two. Just not a good movie whatsoever.

Watching the original right now after watching the sequel a few days ago. Night and day when watching back to back over a short time. This movie is incredible and that's the real reason for why the sequel didnt work. You can't come close to just how good this movie is, and they really shouldn't have tried, as it just sets viewers up for disappointment.

Don't mess with perfection by trying to bring it back, or you will end up with nothing but disappointed viewers who can't not compare to the original.

Also, for those praising Denzel in this film, IMHO he was easily the biggest weakness in the movie. I kept waiting for him to say "my man" and give his little smirk from American gangster. As much as I love Denzel in his other roles, he felt completely miscast in this character, and provided a glaring distraction in the flow of the film whenever he was on screen.

This was bad. The initial siege is great and lifted my expectations a bit before dropping them very quickly. I feel the casting director blew this one pretty badly.

Did Denzel get cast and then come in and change the movie script and dialogue to his liking?

The only character that was remotely likable and well-cast was Acacius. Paul Mescal did not fit in this role, unfortunately, but was also given pretty terrible dialogue and inconsistencies that were hard to reconcile with.

And freaking great white in the Colosseum?

Just watched this on Paramount +. A few thoughts:

Im surprised no one mentioned the Baboon fight scene because it got a lot of attention on Reddit and the internet. But wow, the CGI on the baboons was bad!! Like really bad. The baboons didnt look realistic at all and the bad CGI ruined the entire fight scene for me. Im surprised the editors let that scene in the movie or didnt try to polish it up more.

Made me appreciate the tiger fight scene in the original Gladiator movie. Just looked it up and didnt realize they used live tigers for that scene. Ridley Scott should've done a much better job with that baboon fight scene because it was laughably bad, especially when compared to the fight scenes made in the original 25 freaking years ago!

Agree with everyone else on Paul Mescal lacking the star quality that Crowe had in the original. Mescal wasnt bad, but he was pretty meh, and for a movie like this and a role like that, you need someone with more star power who can own the scene.

Denzel's accent, or lack there of, was pretty noticeable and weird considering that literally everyone else in the movie has some variation of a British accent lol. It made the scenes with him kind of awkward.

I still enjoyed the movie for what it was, but the original was obviously better. I would give it a 6.5/10.

All of the animal fight scenes were just ridiculous.
CGI was worst for the baboons, then the sharks, the rhino was respectable.

The logistics of getting sharks to Rome, alive, filling the area with salt water, etc. is just bonkers dumb.
However....
The depiction of a domesticated rhino being ridden around like a quarter horse at the Houston Live Stock Show is worse.

Agree with this. I went back and looked at all of the Gladiator 2 fight scenes in the Colosseum and they all missed the mark for me. It was probably the biggest weakness of the movie. It lacked that epic feeling that the first movie had where you felt like they were actually in the Colosseum itself.

Yeah, I guess I assumed (for some reason) that they weren't meant to be actual baboons which is why they looked off. I think I justified in my head that Ridley took some license with these animals just to spice things up a bit.

Among other things....Denzel doesn't fit in this movie.....he's too "Denzel" for his character to be believable.

I kept expecting him to tell people they had 9 seconds to decide their fate.

Yeah, I caught this recently on a flight and have a hard time believing anybody actually watched this movie and legitimately thought it was good. The CG animals were laughably bad, the plot devices were cliche and comically simplistic, and worst of all, the movie was just boring. I'm actually a little bit embarrassed for denzel that he did this movie.
