Great movie. They left room for a sequel but never did one.

Possibly one of the greatest films ever made. I feel like it's woefully under-appreciated

I was hoping for a sequel to M&C and with so many books in the series they had ample material. What happened, was filming this type of movie too expensive?

I think filming naval scenes is traditionally one of the more expensive settings for movies. TC might be able to provide some insight, I've just seen that said before.

May need to watch it again. I honestly don't remember a thing about it.

I remember enjoying it enough to think "wasn't a waste of time" but not much else. Need to give it another run as well.

Regarding sequels I distinctly remember it ending and thinking "that's the end? Really"?

I would definitely recommend reading the Aubrey-Maturin series, there are a ton of books.

I bought this on dvd in college, but my TV was so bad it was unwatchable. I would kill for this to be updated into 4K

I'm sorry for the false hope. The series of books is voluminous though, so why don't you try them out? The movie was based on 5 of them if I recall correctly

it didnt do well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel from what ive read. despite the accolades critically, it only made $200-ish million over a $150million budget. i also think PotC coming out that year, and obviously the Marvel explosion a few years later, producers didnt want to waste their time on something like this.

I read they have a prequel in development but it has been in the works for a few years so no idea if it comes to fruition. The plot is supposed to focus on Aubrey's first command. Supposedly Tom Holland the Spider Man guy is under discussion for the lead. I'm not sure he is a tough enough guy to play Aubrey.

This thread sent me down a rabbithole. Movies still in development but Covid delayed it. Development started in 2021.

He's not. He was absolutely the wrong casting in Uncharted. He always seemed 15 years old, and he'd run into the same problem trying to play a naval officer like Aubrey. He'd seem more like a cabin boy or young ensign.

I still get goosebumps watching the scene where Hollom and Blakeney are peering off into the fog wondering if there is danger out there and Aubrey seeing the silhouette just before the shells start flying.

I think the Volume technology for Mandolarian would help this be cheaper. You make the deck of a ship and put it in the Volume, and it keeps the cost way down.

Another problem in getting this made that I don't know how to solve is that there are practically no parts for women.

Giving it a subtitle so we'd think it was a sequel to movie we'd missed was brilliant marketing.

If they do make another M&C I hope they don't CGI all of the ocean scenes like Greyhound. As much as I liked that movie I just think the CGI effect was odd.

The boat is dockside in San Diego Bay, you can tour it and what not. It's not a very big ship.
