Not only does it scream quintessential 80s, but the lasting power of both the song and video is remarkable. It's actually kinda insane to think that video was made in the 80s because it's so damn cool.

As a teen in HS in the 80s lots of good suggestions here but I think this has persisted as the most recognizable 80s anthem. And the movie was so identifiable for every teen.








As a memorable video though A-ha takes the top prize.

Could sworn it was late 80s

The second song that came to mind for me was the Smiths How Soon is Now. So we will go with that.

"The Whole of the Moon" by the Waterboys doesn't have broad name recognition, but is one that feels pretty quintessentially 80s to me.

The best song ABOUT the '80s might be "Welcome to the Boomtown" by David and David.


I don't remember seeing that Waterboys video even once?? Great song though.

Boomtown…I was having "issues" at A&M when that song came out, there's couple of lyrics of that song that, um , scared me straight.

That's because MTV didn't exist before 1981. It actually released in 1979 in the UK.

lots of good stuff in this thread.......the 80s had good music from MTV, movies, and radio....however, for me, the quintessential 80s music could be heard at the clubs.........these 3 in particular.........

Song.."Don't You Forget about Me" or "Melt with You" are tough to argue against.
Video.."Take on Me" or "Money for Nothing" are acceptable answers. I can't argue with "Thriller" either. So essentially, I'm providing nothing new to this thread. Great answers.

Really, I'm not sure how there can be a more correct answer than Thriller.
Take on Me is a solid #2.
