Any hymn played in the traditional arrangement. She played keyboard in church for years sitting right next to my now mother-in-law. More than 2 years after her death, I still think of her sitting next to her close friend playing those classic hymns when I hear them.

"A Hazy Shade of Winter" by Simon and Garfunkel, remade by the Bangles

"Venus" by Shocking Blue covered by Bananarama

These are all songs that I thought were new until my mom started singing them in the car.

Deepest sympathies. Every mother-child relationship is not idyllic. I pray God already has -- or will -- put a spiritual mother in your path (a friend, a teacher, a neighbor, a coo-worker) as a source of blessing and encouragement.

My first memory of popular music was riding in the car with my mom as a toddler and listening to AM radio. This song came on a lot and I loved it. It was my first "favorite song".

And then there are songs that my mom had on 45 record. Anything by Elvis or Sam Cooke (she graduated high school in 1961).

Kinda off topic, but I saw Peter Noone in concert a few years ago and he was great. Unlike a lot of old artists who are just going through the motions, he seems to really love his classic hits and enjoy singing them.
