Family vacation last year and I convinced my sister it was time that my 12yo nephew got to stay up with his grandpa and I and watch a scary movie (something he and I did on family vacations growing up).

The easy choice last year was The Thing. My all-time favorite, and palatable for a kid his age.

Year 2 approaching now and I'm trying to decide on what film. Don't want any nudity, so some classics like Halloween, The Shining and the Friday the 13th movies are out. I think The Exorcist is just too long for him (or my dad to stay awake for) these days. He's too young for "elevated horror" (as the millennials say), so something like Hereditary is out.

Jaws?
Alien?

The Ring is the right answer. Scary, has that thing that all pre-teens like which is an element of urban legend, and not edgy enough to warrant an R rating.

Either one of those. Alien will blow his mind more though.

Alien is the perfect choice you're looking for.

Other options that meet your criteria:

Poltergeist
The Babadook
Scream
Black Phone
Doctor Sleep

Scream
The Ring
The Grudge
Cabin in the Woods (maybe too meta for a 12-year-old, but also could see them thinking it's awesome)
The Conjuring
Alien
Final Destination
Poltergeist
Jaws
A Quiet Place
Paranormal Activity
Dawn of the Dead
Frailty
The Lost Boys

Got it, a couple of boobs might slip into some of my suggestions.

Was gonna suggest Trick R Treat but there's an orgy scene. Other than that it would be perfect for a 12-year-old.

You're preaching to the choir. I personally think it's odd to let your kid watch grotesque brutality but draw the line at bewbs...but alas, OP asked for movies without nudity.

Disturbia meets your criteria. I've never been a big horror movie or Shia Lebouf fan, but that movie is great.

Are you okay with foul language?

I watched Child's Play with my son when he was 12 and that was probably his first scary movie. Unlike my dad I didn't have him watch scary movies like Jaws, Aliens, The Exorcist, etc. when he was 7 or 8.

At 12 he loved Chucky, after Childs Play he watched all of the sequels and had all of his friends watch.

You are welcome to have that battle with my sister, I'll pass.

Never been a horror movie fan, but do enjoy a few. For me, I will ALWAYS watch a Scream movie. They are always just good fun.

Alien would be my favorite "horror" movie of all time. I saw that mention of Doctor Sleep earlier, which I consider incredibly underrated. However, it is much more enjoyable if you first watch the Shining, so probably hold off on that one until he can see boobs.

I've never found Sigourney Weaver particularly hot, but when strips down to those tiny panties and t-shirt in Alien…it's surprising.

Tremors should've won Best Picture when it came out. Honestly one of the top five most rewatchable movies ever made. It hits every time.

Remember seeing this in the theater as a kid and thought 'Jackpot'! Was a nice surprise to an already good movie.

Alien. The Thing is a great one, but its scare factor is more psychological wondering who might be a thing, whereas Alien is among the scariest movies ever made. Alien is like going to the haunted house at the county fair.

Do you want to scare him away from ever going to the beach, then Jaws. (Which is pretty much the impact that movie had on this Brazoria County former beach-goer).

When a Stranger Calls

I was born and raised a horror movie junkie and I slept on the floor of my parents room when I was 13 and watched it.

People doing crazy things was far more terrifying than any monster/ghost/animal.

All great answers guys... I think Alien is going to win out.

Scream is too meta, not sure he can appreciate the references to standard horror movie tropes when he's never seen most of them being referenced.

And The Ring I don't want to draw the ire of his mother regarding a movie where a mother tosses her kid down a well.

My wife and I love the horror genre. A movie that never receives due credit and it's one of my favorites is Oculus.

If not Oculus, I'll echo The Descent.
