Black Phone was dumb... sorry

What about Psycho; Id also throw Silence of the Lambs in the mix... trying to remember Event Horizon and if it'd be "too soon" for 12...

Aliens is good though-

If you're going to go old school, add in The Thing From Another World or The Creature From The Black Lagoon.

Event Horizon has nudity, and I'd be a little to concerned the concept of what hell is like might be too much for a 12 year old to handle.

At that age, you can throw in movies like Predator into the "horror" as well imo. And it's macho AF.

I think The Sixth Sense is one of the best "horror" movies ever made.
I went into it as an 18 year old on a date. I guess I didn't get the memo, as I just remember hearing it was a "psychological thriller". I was not prepared for some of those scenes AT ALL. No movie has even come close to scaring me as much as that one did. A couple days later, I was early to move into Dunn Hall, so it was often very empty and quiet. Not gonna lie, I was freaked out walking those hallways alone at night sometimes.

Sure. The fourth time I saw Creature From the Black Lagoon was in 3d at The Grove on campus. Good times!

The Sixth Sense would be a great choice.

I was 12 when that came out and can distinctly remember seeing it in the theaters.

Yeah, it is overlooked in the horror genre sometimes, I think because the acting and writing are so good.

The Haunting of Hill House
The original, from the '60s, not the remake. A classic "scary" movie.

I was about that age when started to watch some of the Alfred Hitchcock films

That original movie was the first one that we let our daughter watch when she was pretty young, maybe 5 or so. She thought it was great, and never had any issues after watching it.

No mention of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". IMO, it's one of the must see classics. Not much gore, and no nudity. The intro of Leatherface is one of the most iconic scenes in horror cinema. Bonus points for being filmed in TX (Round Rock and Leander).

Oh! Blair Witch- and play it up like it's a new documentary.

That was one that depending on when you saw it in the course of its release dramatically impacted your reaction. Saw it opening night and was totally tripped out. My roommate saw it a few weeks later and laughed at me when he got home...

Most of my favs already mentioned specifically Poltergeist, alien, sixth sense.

Maybe add Hellraiser? Cannot recall if there is nudity.

Another creepy cheesy one is They Live.

Probably too late, but just saw The Skeleton Key on TV, and that would fit your criteria.

No nudity, but it's got that super scary scene of the old lady bathing.

Skeleton Key and Oculus would be my choices. My daughter is a big horror genre fan and she really liked both.

I really liked Skeleton Key, it is a bit of a slow-burn for traditional horror, but a great flick.

Some punk popped his head into the theater less than five minutes in and yelled It was the slaves. Not a total spoiler as the logic-jump to connect that isn't straight forward, but enough that you are well aware before the ending

Another suggestion that I haven't seen mentioned: IT Chapters 1 & 2.
