I will never understand it. The only way it makes sense is if they somehow gather extremely damaging dirt on you and suck you in as an influencer, hanging the skeletons over your head for the rest of your life.

It doesn't make sense to me that some of the smarter and more successful people in Hollywood would go seeking it.

In Leah Remini's book, it seemed clear that most of the membership now is people who were born into it. I think there were a lot of people who joined in the 70s seeking ways to be more effective/successful (how those courses were marketed) and then their kids and families were brought in. Leah's mom joined and was in Sea Org. Targeting celebrities is definitely one of their strategies but I don't get the sense they're pulling in new adult recruits since the Internet.

Leah's book is worth the read just for the chapters around Cruise/Holmes wedding.

Could say the same about Christianity or any other religion. If you take the emotion out of it, it's a pretty crazy story yet people believe it the world over. Mind boggling that people actually believe that there was an Ark with a male and female version of each species peacefully comingling together onboard like some Carnival cruise...well, maybe not Carnival. Something more civilized...like a Scandinavian cruise or something.
