Scariest movie I'd ever seen when I caught it in HS. I had no idea what I was getting into.

Saw it as an adult and it scared the hell outta me.

The story about the original cut of the footage from the lost crew is insane. I remember watching that movie in theaters, it's fantastic.

This movie gets weirdly talked about a lot on this forum...

That said, I agree with pretty much everyone else's take. I saw it as a kid and it was the scariest movie I'd ever seen - totally burned into my brain... I watched it a few months ago and thought it held up pretty well. Not as scary as I remembered, but nothing ever is.

Overall a really cool movie and concept. Tell TC and the other believers not to go opening up the UAP box

Blech. So boring, not scary, confusing.

Acting was good though.

Most terrifying movie I have ever seen

Made my husband return it and rent 2 80's comedies because I wasn't sure I could sleep after seeing it

I guess I need to watch this again, because when I saw it when it came out, it did nothing for me, total snooze fest and not scary at all.

Watching at home in 2023 is just a totally different beast than watching in the theater in 1997.

Sci-fi horror has changed a lot over the past 25 years.

Edit - sorry, just saw you were talking about seeing it when I first came out.

Great movie. Might not hold up since effects have changed so much since then, but I saw it in an old ass theater in rural Colorado. Scary as hell. None of us wanted to head back to the campground after that.

I have no idea how people can call this the scariest movie they've ever seen. I didn't find it scary at all.

When I think of scary, I think of movies like The Exorcist, Insidious, The Shining, or Hereditary.

Different strokes for different folks? Sense of terror varies just like sense of humor. For instance I think The Shining is pretty goofy. For some reason, I thought a spaceship back from hell was pretty terrifying back in the day.

Same as many others, when I first saw it when it first came to HBO when I was in High school, scariest movie I ever saw, which Exorcist was probably the top before it. I watched it several times as it was on HBO regularly and it stayed pretty scary to me.

Didn't really watch it after high school, then a few years ago I told my teen nephews about it and how scary it was so they insisted on watching with me. I remember most of the time their comment was "when does it get scary" and for the life of me I just thought the movie changed since I last saw it. I could have swore there were more murder orgy scenes or something. It didn't really seem much scarier than a run of the mill horror as I watch it with them.

Just shows how more extreme movies have gotten and how desensitized we have become to them.

I like this movie quite a bit. I'm not sure why I didn't see this theatrically since this is the kind of movie that I'm typically interested in seeing. In any event, when I saw it a couple years later, I thought it was visually striking and an interesting twist (from Hell) on the Alien extraterrestrial critter. While I did find the movie to be creepy, it was not a bit scary. But I think the scare factor depends on how old you were when you saw it. Alien scared the **** out of 12-year-old me, but Event Horizon had no fright impact on 32-year-old me.

The Sixth Sense is the scariest movie ever made imo. The Ring scared the sh** out of me too. The only movie on your list I found truly scary was Hereditary. The only part of The Exorcist that scared me was the part where they draw her blood (I hate watching blood being drawn). Guess we all have different tastes.

This was the scary part. Just a totally different sci-fi concept than most were used to. And the depictions of hell were pretty graphic and frightening as a teenager.

I can only think of 3 movies that have scared me: The Exorcist, Fire in the Sky and The Day After.

For me, it is Alien, The Exorcist, Poltergeist, and Paranormal Activity.

I can certainly see what you're saying about The Day After, though.

It freaked none of my friends out. Scared me like crazy. I went into it thinking it was a "psychological thriller" not expecting anything remotely creepy. Maybe that had something to do with it. Scared the hell out of me as an 18 year old who thought he was tough **** lol.

The Ring would make my list as well.

For its time one of thr best Sci fi/horror.

Just turned it on. I'd forgotten it was one of those movies where stuff that's supposed to happen in the future is now a date that's in the past and it didn't happen.
