He definitely gave all the characters some of the flavor from the films.

I think I'm going to pull trigger on the Serkis audiobook. Sounds intriguing and I've still never had an audiobook where there author does more acting vs reading.

I've got that red-bound edition of LOTR (also acquired from B Dalton but in the mid-90s), but really like that Hobbit version too. Looks like it is reasonable on Ebay. Had no idea it exists, so thanks for posting.

The versions of LOTR and Hobbit I started out with were these, purchased in the 90s from Kmart. Super bummed that the paperbacks didn't stand the test of time, but these covers were what I based my mental images of characters until the PJ movies came out.

Edited to add: These are from Ebay, I no longer have these paperbacks.

I remember those paperbacks!!

I don't recall what mine looked like but I read these books in the early to mid 80s.

My dad has that edition of the Hobbit. It's beautiful. I absolutely love it and have told my whole family it's mine when my dad passes.

He also has this edition of the Lord of the Rings which I have also claimed:

I haven't seen this one posted. I keep forgetting to take a picture of my copy so I grabbed this off the internet. I found this in a secondhand bookstore years ago.

Working from home today so I dug out my copy. First edition. 1967. I got it from a book sale by the US Army Europe library in Heidelberg while stationed there 1984-1987.

That's the edition of LOR I have from the 80s.

I also have the illustrated Hobbit from whenever it was published (not at home, but I'll edit - presumably late 70s since the illustrations appear to be based on the animated flick). - 1977

I read the hobbit when i was 5, and that cartoon movie came out around then. I didnt like the cartoon nearly as much as the books.

I ended up on a strange world tour after that, and lotr was my constant reading companion. I read all 3 probably 4 times during that era, and it was magic. That 70's cartoon movie came out then too and i loved that.

These books defined my childhood in some ways.

I've read them a couple of times again as an adult.

Really iconic.

Love the movies though. I actually approve of almost all jackson's changes.

In lieu of ten thousand words I will say I prefer the books.

I have only two books. The first one is The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The second is The Silmarillion. The first one is quite worn out...) But I can't manage to tackle The Silmarillion.

Got The Return of the Shadow in this afternoon. Found a decent price on AbeBooks.com. It's an old library book from Danbury, CT so I had to get the clear plastic cover off, but other than that it's in decent shape.

Thoughts on this first American "first state" edition?

Seems very overpriced per https://tolkienlibrary.com/press/the-first-us-edition-of-the-hobit.php

Seems overpriced, it I guess that depends on condition.

Looking on AbeBooks this morning they have three that are at $10k, $8.5k, and $7.8k so maybe not as overpriced as it would seem.
