Show back to the future and titanic on alternating days?

When's the last time something like this happened that affected theaters in this way?

I hope they'll show classics. At any given time I'd rather go see Fight Club or Usual Suspects or Empire Strikes Back than whatever these underpaid writers have come up with in the last few years.

1) show classics
2) show sporting events
3) rent out theaters for private events

I've seen theaters around me do all of these

There was nothing really big released between Tenet in September 2020 and Spider-Man: No Way Home in December 2021 though so the only real option was classics for quite a while.

I always enjoy going to the theater to see old favorites.

I figure they'll have to do that to put butts in the seats.

Getting to see movies that I never had the opportunity to see in the theater originally is super enjoyable.

One of the reasons I enjoy the greatness of the Alamo Drafthouse. They always have something old mixed in with the new releases.

I've been able to catch a Godfather I and II double feature, Goodfellas, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, treated my stepdad to a showing of American Graffiti for Father's Day once since it's one of his favorites, and many of the early Bond.

My mom took me to see the original King Kong in some theater in Bellaire, TX when I was roughly 8. It was about that time that Jaws came out, but my parents did not take me to see that one probably given our proclivity to go to the beach frequently. Didn't get to see that one on a theater screen until some time in the last 10 years, and that was worth the wait despite having seen it on TV countless times.

I'd love to see Connery's Bond movies on the big screen. Or Clint's Man With No Name trilogy.

I'd go rewatch both of those. Peak Jodie Foster.

A lot of multi-plex theaters were struggling before this strike, and most have tried all these things.

I wonder if the handful of single and two or three screen theaters are going to be OK, but some of the bigger chains will continue to consolidate or close house.

I think some companies are going to delay releasing movies now because they know there will be less competition if they wait a little bit.

Films won't dry up. Yes, the strike is about to wreak havoc on the release calendar, but not everything will move. Plenty of films - ones that don't require the cast to promote them - are sticking to their dates. For instance, even if there was no strike, someone like Denzel Washington wouldn't have been out there doing a ton of press anyway for The Equalizer 3, so that one isn't moving from its September 1 date. There will be a number of films like that, through the end of the year, that will take advantage of others clearing out/moving 2024.

If Dune 2 gets pushed into 2024 I'll be pissed.

If that's already happened I don't want to know…

Sounds like AMC already has a bit of a cash flow problem. Could be dicey for them even without a long shutdown. If it goes on for awhile who knows?

Warner Bros is currently "considering" pushing Dune: Part Two, Wonka, and Aquaman and Lost Kingdom all to 2024.

They'd give up all that revenue just because of the lack of interviews? That's kinda nuts to me. I mean I get star power is important, especially in social media, but I feel like the marketing can pick up the slack on that. How much difference do press junkets and premieres really make in the end?

I don't think anyone knows the answer, but it sounds like Warner Bros is afraid to find out. To them it's a role of the dice. It might make no difference whatsoever, but I also undertake the thinking that the the social media presence and marketing/talk show power of Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, and Florence Pugh could bring a ton of the younger crowd to the theaters they might not get otherwise. It's so hard to say.

tom cruise did it for Maverick (as in delaying the release) and it worked out alright.
