Damn. Saw the History of the Eagles tour stop in Htown in 2014. Pretty sure it was the last tour that both he and Glenn Frey performed.

Damn. Just finished Felder's autobiography this week so I've been on a big Eagles kick. Even watched the documentary today.

Uggh, that sucks.
Timothy B Schmidt was a great replacement, but Randy was awesome. Try and Love Again is massively underrated as an Eagles song.

I was there too. Really glad I took the time to experience it. Especially in the format they did with that tour where they started with just the few founding members and built it up. What an experience. Then a year later Frey was gone.

The Eagles closing live shows with Meisner and Take it to the Limit in their peak says everything you need to know about the song and how he sang it.

His and Henley's voice, whether backing Glenn Frey together, or one backing the other, created the Eagles' signature sound. Greatness!

One of my all time favorite songs by my favorite band. Take it to the limit Randy.

Great talent, and another one who had to deal with Glen Frey's bull****

That melding of talent that came together in California -- Buffalo Springfield, the Eagles, Poco, Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Fogelberg, Jimmy Messina, etc. -- produced some of the most memorable music of the '70s.

It's incredible to think that all knew each other, learned from one another and worked together. And sad to know that both Glenn Frey and Randy Meisner are both gone.

Want to hear a wild story that I just learned? A 14 year old Don Felder had a job as a guitar teacher at a local music shop in Gainesville, FL. His best student? An 11 year old Tommy Petty.

Petty basically said that wasn't true btw.
But I still like to believe it.

Meisner was not part of the History of the Eagles tour. That was Bernie Leadon.

I heard that story, too. Always thought it was true.

Bernie's brother Tom Leaden WAS in Mudcrutch with Tom Petty. Tom Leaden passed on in March, sadly.

Tom L wrote Hollywood Waltz, btw.

Perhaps so. I'm just glad I was able to see them before Frey passed.

Don Felder says otherwise:

"He also talked about his early days and 2009 reunion with Mudcrutch; how Don Felder did not teach him how to play guitar as the former Eagle claimed in his 2009 memoir but did teach him the piano; his latest album, the return-to-roots "Mojo"; how he was blessed that he "got to know everyone who I really admired except Elvis"; and how much he enjoys doing "Buried Treasure," sharing his favorite songs and artists with people who otherwise might not hear them."

Who to believe??? Apparently, Felder taught him something. Age can change memories.

That was Felder.

And Leadon poured a beer on Frey's head right before he left the band.
Frey wasn't exactly in it for the camaraderie, he was about money and success, and treated it like he was the CEO of a business. That led to problems all the way up to his death.
oragator

Agree, and that's why I put "basically" in there…I just think it an important distinction between "yeah I knew the guy and he maybe learned a bit from me about music" to "I was the one who taught guitar to the guy who created maybe the best and most successful garage band sound in history". It's taking much more credit than he deserves.

But the Gainesville music scene at that point was crazy, and if you throw in nearby Jax it was even crazier. Hard to believe the amount of talent that small sliver produced.
In that era, Gainesville put up members of the eagles, CSN&Y, the motels, Petty's bands (Mudcrutch and the heartbreakers) etc. And Jax had the Allman brothers, Skynard, Molly Hatchett, .38 special among others. And there was some interaction between the two groups.

Back to Meisner though, not sure why, but his death has bothered me more than most celebrity passings. Think it's because he was the gentle nice guy in a den of wolves. And so talented and under appreciated. Just never really got his due.

Yeah, Felder was pretty much an a-hole. Frey and Henry couldn't wait to get rid of him.

Meisner's vocals on Take it to the Limit, are just about as perfect as you get

Henry? Are you Asian? Lol.

And if you think Felder is the ******* in that group I have no idea what to tell you. Glen Frey is one of the biggest *******s ever and Don Henry was not far behind.
