What a coincidence....I was just watching this then clicked on this board. I love this live performance.

That said....

1. Rush
2. Triumph
3. April Wine
4. Loverboy

Thank you! As a Triumph fan I hadn't seen this and it's awesome.

Man, their whole set at US Fest 83 was pretty amazing. A lot of people say it was the best show of that weekend. They were just so good live.

Saw the Never Surrender tour in Reunion Arena. Incredible. Rik Emmitt is maybe one of the most underrated singer/guitarists in rock history.

It's been argued by many that RUSH's Exist Stage Left is the greatest live album ever recorded; and not just for the genius of the musicians, but for the mics, sound and production. Alex's harmonics on Red Barchetta are flawless. Geddy with his mid-base playing and filling in the bottom with bass pedals before switching to keyboards. Alex's work on the foot-controlled sound fader in the intro to Xanadu is incredible and the ecco, crowd and bells make this live track twice as good as the studio version. I wouldn't have liked Xanadu, if I hadn't heard it first on Exit Stage Left. Inserting the choir in the crowd for intro to Close to the Heart was a master stroke of improvement to an already great tune. And all this without a single missed note from either of them. Every cut on Exit Stage Left is better than the studio version.

Rest in Peace, Neil.

before you attack me and start gushing about Neil Peart, people can be talented and still make terrible music.

This. Peart was an all time, supremely talented drummer. Too bad his band made lame music.

Dave Matthews and John Mayer may be very talented. But their music makes me want to stick an ice pick in my ear.

That's a stretch. That would be like calling Pear Jam a Chicago band because Eddie Vedder was born in Chicago.

I agree with you, but bad example.
The core 4 guys of Pearl Jam were all raised in seattle and playing in bands. Eddie was a single person, and just the last piece.

In my younger days, these would be fighting words. But I now totally understand this point of view. Tastes in music differ. When I first heard Rush, I immediately loved them. Limelight was the song I heard.

Specifically, I loved the guitar and the vocals. I loved Geddy Lee's voice. I learned over time that many people HATE his voice. And again, there is no right or wrong, just preferences.

So what is it that you 2 hate about Rush? Is there any song you don't hate? Do you hear them and immediately shut it off?

No judgment, just curious.

AggieOO is totally right. Look at a band like dragon force, or dream theater, or a guy like devin townsend.. all musicians that are savant level talented, but it's clearly not everyone's cup of tea, and there are def. super talented people that make terrible music in lots of people's opinions.
If you ask a random symphony or film score composer if they like, oh say, Ghost of Perdition by Opeth, he probably thinks it's terrible, but musically speaking, it's off the charts talented.

I'm a musician (guitar, drums, piano), I love all sorts of prog metal and rock/metal in general, but I am not going to sit here and say I love rush. I like some of their songs, and some parts of other songs. I know how to play a lot of their riffs, and drum parts even, but I never just put them on, and they aren't in any of my playlists.

I feel like if I was born maybe 6-7 years earlier I would like Rush a lot more (and zeppelin for that matter). But I was born in 1980, so instead, I like Tool!

I totally get why people don't get into Tool. It's very acquired, but I don't think those that don't acquire it are cursed with a bland musical ear.

I was born in 1973. Also like (love) Tool. Not a fan of Rush (but respect them). So maybe that wouldn't have helped you either.

Somewhere between the greatest American band thread and this thread lies The Band. All but Levon were Canadians, but I always felt like Levon (an Arkansas farm boy) was the heart and soul behind the music. Not sure if that makes them more Canadian or American, but either way they were phenomenal, and one of the greatest bands ever:
I regret I have only one Blue Star to give to this post.
