It is my favorite Superman movie. I've never understood why it didn't get as much love as the original.

It was the first CGI Superman that really tried to show what the OG overpowered hero would look like. The slow mo bullet to the eye was so damn cool at the time.

I consider MoS to be one of the best superhero movies, but it is so damn hard to overcome Christopher Reeve in Superman: The Movie. That original movie holds up just as well as it did in December 1978, but it is also a traditional origin story. MoS did not follow that same pattern, exactly, like say going from Batman 1989 to Batman Begins.

MoS features a great score by Hans Zimmer, but Zimmer's work pales in comparison to John Williams' score. Reeve blows Henry C away as both Superman and especially Clark Kent. Also have to favor Margot Kidder over Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Lex Luthor doesn't show up in MoS, but that would be a no doubt about it decision for Gene Hackman over whatever that actor's name is that portrayed the character in BvS. But I will say Michael Shannon was superior to Terrence Stamp as General Zod.

I feel like I am slamming MoS, but as much as I like the movie, it is just up against one of my all-time favorites. MoS gave us a far different look at like on Krypton than anything we had seen before, and I look at Zod as a more believable villain. He believes in his mission, and is not just a hate-filled killer. I also liked how Snyder treated both Superman and Zod as aliens among us. The original movies didn't go down that road.

Re-watched MoS a couple months ago before going to see The Flash. I had forgotten just how good MoS was.

I thought it was horrible. Ending was 10 minutes of invincible people slamming each other through buildings with a big Michael Bay like cgi fest. Then it just ends with breaking a neck by hand. And this is the same issue I have with most superhero movies.

I know some people didn't like the way they changed the Kents, like the dad saying he should have let the bus sink without saving the kids. And personally, I didn't think the final showdown was great for the reasons listed above. With superpowered beings you have no context on how the fight is progressing. When you see someone punched through 20 grain silos into a gas station that promptly explodes, you'd think okay that's the end of that guy. But when they get up, apparently unscathed, it destroys the stakes.

Those are legit complaints in my opinion. On the flipside, I loved the themes of the movie - how isolating it would be to basically be a god. The soundtrack isn't as iconic as John Williams, but like most Hans Zimmer soundtracks it does a perfect job setting the mood. What are you going to do when you're not saving the world is still in my playlist rotation. It's so good. The acting was pretty solid across the board. A little on the nose in some places, but generally it all works and Henry Cavill is great. All in all, I felt it was a great Nolanized version of Superman. Of the new DCEU movies, it's definitely my favorite.

I caught part of this the other day on TV the other day. I remember liking the Smallville fight first time I saw it. But it starts on the Kent farm with Zod threatening Clark's mom. Clark tackles Zod through silos and fields into downtown Smallville. Not only does he take the fight to a much more populated area so more people and building can be hurt, he also leaves his mom alone with Zod's underlings. I had never realized how dumb the beginning to that fight was.

I have always enjoyed/appreciated Man of Steel. I think Superman is possibly the hardest superhero to make a solid movie for. I thought Snyder did a good job of approaching Superman almost like the X-Men, which is my favorite Marvel property. The X-Men are societal rejects, people hate them because they're different. If Superman existed he would also be rejected since a being with those kinds of powers is god-like. It would cause religious hysteria, all kinds of mayhem just because his existence would make mankind question everything they have believed. His parents know he needs to hide his powers out of their own fear, regardless of what he might use them for. I would have enjoyed it if Snyder got to do another stand alone, but Batman vs Superman and the Justice League movies are awful.

I guess my favorite aspect of it is the portrayal of Superman as living morally and wanting to do good, but when faced with an amoral, evil threat to innocents his morality gives him the strength to end the threat. It was the first time that I truly saw a struggle in the character that made him more human. Thought it was well done.
